Container Access Ramps: Choosing a Ground-Level Loading Ramp

A container access ramp is the simplest way to drive a forklift or push a pallet truck straight into a ground-level shipping container. Without one, that 150mm lip at the container door is a genuine obstacle — and an injury risk if teams try to bridge it with pallets or improvised boards. Container ramps are also widely sold as a container loading ramp or, where the capacity is rated for a laden fork truck, simply a forklift ramp. This guide explains how container ramps work, the one decision that matters most (ramp only versus ramp and platform), and how to specify the right capacity, material and size for your operation.

What a container access ramp does

A ground-level container ramp bridges the gap between a smooth yard surface and the container floor, giving a steady, load-rated slope up to the door. The ramps we stock are designed for standard shipping containers with a 150mm floor height, sat at ground level on a firm surface. If you are loading a temperature-controlled or specialist container with a raised or set-back floor, the geometry changes — it is worth checking the height before you order.

One point people miss: you need a smooth, flat and sturdy floor area in front of the container for the ramp to sit on. Soft ground, a broken yard surface or a slope will undermine even the best ramp, so factor the standing area into your planning.

Ramp only vs ramp and platform — the key decision

This is the choice that shapes everything else, so settle it first.

A ramp-only unit is a one-piece incline moved into place from the front by fork-lift truck. It gives a steady slope up to the container floor and is the quickest, most compact, lowest-cost option. It suits sites where you simply need to get a truck in and out and the load isn't packed tight to the container roof.

A ramp and platform unit adds a level working platform at the top of the slope (typically around 1850mm long) and is positioned from the side by fork-lift. That flat section lets a truck approach the doorway horizontally rather than still climbing at the threshold — which matters when goods are stacked tightly to the top of the container and a nose-up approach would clip them. Steel or aluminium?

The lightweight aluminium ramps are made from high-tensile aluminium for lighter applications and can be moved into position by pallet truck or fork-lift. At 52–73kg they are far easier to reposition, making them a good fit where the ramp moves between locations or where loads are lighter. As a rule of thumb: steel for heavy, high-frequency forklift work; aluminium for lighter, more mobile duties.

Sizing the capacity

Rate the ramp to the combined weight of the fork-lift truck plus its heaviest load — not just the pallet. A counterbalance forklift is a heavy machine in its own right, so a 6,000kg ramp can be used up surprisingly quickly once you add the truck's own weight. If in doubt, size up. Positioning, movement and safety

All the steel models move on a simple fork-truck pocket, so one trained operative can position a ramp-only unit quickly and safely. An anti-slip aggregate grit surface is available as an option and is well worth specifying for wet or outdoor sites where tyre grip on a coated steel surface can drop away.

As with any work equipment, container ramps fall under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 1998): keep the unit maintained, inspect it before use, make sure operators are trained, and never exceed the rated capacity. Keep pedestrians clear while a truck is on the ramp, and always confirm the container is chocked or otherwise secured against movement before driving in.

Container ramp, dockboard or yard ramp — which loading ramp do you need?

"Loading ramp" covers three quite different pieces of equipment, and buying the wrong one is an expensive mistake. The deciding factor is simply what you are loading from, and to.

  • Container access ramp — bridges the yard surface to a container sitting at ground level (a 150mm floor height on a standard box). This is the unit described on this page, and the one most people mean when they search for a container loading ramp.
  • Dockboard or dockplate — bridges a raised loading dock to a vehicle bed. A dockboard carries steel side curbs and takes forklift traffic; a dockplate is lighter and intended for pallet trucks, roll cages and foot traffic.   • Mobile yard ramp — a large, wheeled, height-adjustable ramp that lets a forklift drive up to the bed of a curtainsider or box trailer where there is no dock at all. A yard ramp is a much bigger and costlier machine than a container ramp; we do not supply mobile yard ramps, so if that is genuinely what your site needs, a specialist ramp hire or manufacture firm is the right call.

In short: container at ground level, you want a container ramp. Vehicle at a dock, you want a dockboard or dockplate. Trailer in an open yard with no dock, you are into yard-ramp territory.

How to choose a container ramp: five questions

  • How heavy is the truck plus load? Rate to the total, and size up if you're near the limit.
  • Are containers packed tight to the roof? If yes, choose ramp and platform for horizontal access; if not, ramp only will do.
  • How often will it move? Frequent repositioning favours aluminium or a ramp-only steel unit; a fixed loading point can take a heavier ramp and platform.
  • What's the ground like? You need a firm, level, smooth standing area in front of the door — sort this before you order.
  • Indoor or exposed? Specify the anti-slip grit coating for wet or outdoor use.
