Choosing the right drum storage
Start with three questions: how many drums, stored upright or on their side, and do you need built-in spill containment?
Vertical drum stores
Vertical drum stores hold drums upright on galvanised grid shelves — the right choice where drums are decanted by pump from the top, or simply held in stock. Single-drum units start compact and the range scales up for multi-drum storage, keeping drums off the floor and easy to inspect.
Horizontal drum stores
Horizontal (cradle) drum stores rack drums on their side at a working height, so contents can be dispensed straight from the tap. Four-drum and six-drum configurations stack workshop lubricants, oils and process fluids in an organised bank rather than loose on the floor.
Sump-based drum storage
Where you store oils or chemicals, UK guidance (and, for oil in England, the Oil Storage Regulations) expects secondary containment. Sump drum storage pallets are fully welded for secure containment, with a removable galvanised grid for cleaning and fork guides for a safe, secure lift — note these units are moved by forklift. The drum storage unit with sump base combines racked storage with an integral sump beneath.
Covered and fully enclosed drum stores
For outdoor storage, the covered drum storage system is made from 100% recyclable PE, suits easy dispensing and is compatible with most forklifts. Where security matters, fully enclosed steel drum stores have doors with high and low-level venting and 3-point locking — one door on single-drum units, two doors on 2 and 4-drum units — with galvanised grid shelving on vertical models. High-capacity drum storage units
For bulk stock, heavy-duty drum storage units of fully welded construction take 8, 10, 16 or 20 standard 210-litre drums, palletised or loose loaded — 8 and 10-drum units are single tier, 16 and 20-drum units double tier — with 150 mm ground clearance and 760 mm fork centres for forklift handling.
Compliance notes
If you store oil in England in containers over 200 litres, the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations require secondary containment. For chemicals, COSHH risk assessment applies, and flammables fall under DSEAR — segregate incompatible substances and site stores away from drains and watercourses.
