Why secondary containment matters
Under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations and wider environmental law, any business storing oils, fuels or hazardous liquids must provide secondary containment that catches a spill before it escapes. The principle is simple: a bund or sump beneath the container holds the liquid if a drum splits, a tap is left open or a forklift punctures a store. Getting caught without it risks prosecution, clean-up costs and Environment Agency enforcement — spill containment is one of the cheapest ways to stay compliant.
The 110% bunding rule
The capacity benchmark most sites work to is the 110% rule: your bund or spill pallet should hold at least 110% of the volume of the largest single container stored on it, or 25% of the total volume of everything stored — whichever is greater. A pallet holding a single 205-litre drum therefore needs a sump of around 225 litres or more; an IBC bund for a 1,000-litre container needs at least 1,100 litres. Every product below lists its sump capacity so you can match it to your containers.
Drum spill pallets
The workhorse of any chemical or oil store. Our polyethylene spill pallets and sump drum storage pallets take one, two or four 205-litre drums on a removable grid, with the bund concealed underneath. Polyethylene resists most acids, solvents and oils and won't corrode, making it ideal for aggressive chemicals; forklift-accessible versions let you relocate a loaded pallet safely. IBC spill pallets & bunds
For 1,000-litre intermediate bulk containers, our IBC containment pallets and deep-sump IBC storage units provide the larger bund capacity these need, with integral dispensing areas so you can decant from a tap without spilling. Sump pallets, vaults & flooring
Where you need to bund a whole storage area rather than a single container, sump flooring and floor sump pallets create a low-level bunded platform that drums, kegs and small containers sit on directly. Lockable polyethylene vaults and storage vaults add weatherproof, secure outdoor storage with built-in containment — useful for fuel, lubricants and waste oil kept outside.
Portable & flexible bunds
Flexible portable bunds fold flat for transport and pop up to contain leaks from vehicles, generators, plant or temporary refuelling points. They're the go-to for site work, deliveries and emergency containment where a fixed pallet isn't practical.
Choosing the right spill containment
Work through four questions: What are you storing? (drums, IBCs, kegs or a mixed area) — this sets the format. What volume? — apply the 110%/25% rule to size the sump. What liquid? — polyethylene for corrosive chemicals, steel for higher fire ratings near flammables. Indoors or out? — choose a covered vault or lidded unit for outdoor stores so rainwater doesn't fill the bund.
