A smoking shelter gives staff a defined, weather-protected smoking area away from doorways, windows and air intakes — and keeps cigarette litter in one manageable place. Every smoking shelter here is manufactured in the UK by GPC Industries and designed so that at least half of its sides stay permanently open, which is what keeps a shelter outside the Health Act 2006 definition of a "substantially enclosed" smoke-free space. The range
The core free-standing shelters are fabricated from robust heavy-duty box section steel with a galvanised sheet steel roof, and come with a choice of side panels: 16mm twinwall fluted plastic (model BSS204) or powder-coated punched steel — sides only (BSS208) or sides plus back panel (BSS209). Twinwall panels let more light through; punched steel takes harder knocks on industrial sites. There is also a wall-mounted smoking shelter (BSSW6Z) that fixes back to an existing wall for the smallest footprint, and the free-standing green smoking shelter (BSS27Z) where you want a colour-finished unit.
Installation and siting
The free-standing box-section shelters need no ground fixing — they are secured using six 600 × 600mm paving slabs (not supplied), so there's no drilling or groundworks. Note that a forklift is needed to offload these units on delivery. Site the shelter a sensible distance from entrances, opening windows and ventilation intakes, orient the open face away from the prevailing wind, and allow roughly half a metre of standing space per person at realistic peak use. Adding a cigarette bin keeps the area clean.
