Trailer Safety Supports

Trailer safety supports — also called trailer support legs or trailer prop stands — hold a semi-trailer steady while it is parked and being loaded without its tractor unit. Why support a detached trailer?

When the cab is uncoupled, a semi-trailer rests on its landing legs — and its balance changes as goods and fork lift trucks move over the deck. Weight concentrated at the front of the trailer during loading or unloading can tip the trailer forwards onto its nose, and landing legs themselves can fail under repeated fork-truck traffic. A trailer safety support placed under the fifth wheel plate carries that load, preventing nose-tip and protecting against landing-leg collapse. HSE workplace transport guidance highlights trailer tip-over during loading as a known risk, so supports of this kind are a standard control on busy loading docks.

How the Thorworld trailer support works

The unit wheels into position under the fifth wheel plate using its handle, then the ratchet raises the support head to meet the plate — no lifting or pumping gear required. Key specifications from the manufacturer:

The safety sign matters

The biggest operational risk with any trailer prop is a driver coupling up and pulling away while the support is still in place. Thorworld's answer is a purpose-made "Caution — Remove Trailer Support" safety sign (TWCJ-SS-RPVC), pre-fitted with a clip that attaches to a standard air hose fitting — the driver physically encounters the warning when connecting the lines. We recommend ordering a sign with every support and building both into your loading-dock procedure.

Choosing and using trailer supports

Check the height under your trailers' fifth wheel plates falls within the 990–1,295 mm range, and site the support on firm, level ground. One support per trailer being worked is the norm; yards that load multiple detached trailers at once should hold one per bay. As lifting/supporting equipment used at work, trailer supports fall under PUWER — keep them in good order and include them in pre-use checks.
