Wheel chocks are the simplest, lowest-cost way to stop a vehicle moving when it shouldn't — while it's parked, coupled or being loaded and unloaded. Unplanned vehicle movement is one of the main hazards in any loading bay, and chocking the wheels is a standard control alongside trailer keys-out procedures and trailer safety supports. Every wheel chock here is made by Thorworld Industries, with most products designed and manufactured at their Chesterfield factory.
Choosing a wheel chock material
Moulded rubber — the TWC-1 rubber wheel chock (190 × 270 × 190 mm, 6 kg) has a safety grip face for maximum adhesion between the vehicle wheel and the chock, plus a built-in lifting handle. Rubber grips well on smooth or damp yard surfaces, which makes it the default choice for HGV and trailer work.
Cast aluminium — the TWC-3 cast aluminium chock (400 × 180 × 180 mm) weighs just 3.25 kg, so it's the easiest to carry and reposition repeatedly. A long, low profile suits larger wheel diameters. Also available with a handle for improved manual handling and visibility.
Steel — a hardwearing steel wheel chock for tough, high-traffic yards where kerbing and knocks would chew through softer materials.
Yellow plastic — a lightweight, high-visibility chock that's easy to spot in a busy yard and easy for any driver to place.
Keeping chocks where they belong
Chocks walk. The optional TWC-2 anti-theft retaining chain (5 m) tethers TWC-1, TWC-3 and TWC-10 chocks to the dock or a fixed point, so the chock is always at the bay where it's needed.
Using wheel chocks in the loading bay
Chock wheels before loading or unloading starts, and before anyone works near a split-coupled trailer — use chocks together with trailer support legs rather than instead of them. Position the chock snugly against the tyre in the direction the vehicle would roll.
