Steel drums are awkward, heavy and — when they hold oils, fuels or chemicals — hazardous to move by hand. A full 210-litre drum can weigh well over 200kg, so lifting, tipping or rotating one without the right equipment is a recipe for back injuries, crushed feet and spills. What counts as drum handling equipment?
"Drum handling" covers everything you do with a drum once it arrives: moving it across the floor, lifting it onto a bench or into a bund, decanting from it, and tipping or rotating it to pour or mix the contents. Drum trucks handle the moving, lifters and rotators the raising and pouring — different jobs need different tools, and most sites end up with two or three pieces that cover their day-to-day needs rather than one do-everything machine.
The main types
1. Drum trucks and trolleys
The simplest option: a wheeled frame that cradles a single drum so one person can move it across the yard or workshop. A drum truck takes the weight off your back and lets you tilt the drum back onto its axle for transport. They suit low-volume sites that just need to shift a drum from delivery point to point of use.
2. Drum lifters
When you need to raise a drum — onto a stillage, into a bund, or up to a decanting station — a drum lifter does it mechanically. 4. Forklift drum attachments

How to choose
Work through these questions before you buy:
- What are you actually doing? Moving drums needs a truck or trolley; lifting them needs a lifter; emptying them needs a rotator. Map the equipment to the task, not the other way round.
- What do the drums weigh, full? A full 210-litre steel drum is the usual worst case. Check every piece of equipment is rated for the heaviest drum you handle — never assume.
- Plastic or steel drums? Grip mechanisms differ. The DLL04Z lifter, for example, is specified for both plastic and steel drums; some clamps are designed for rimmed steel drums only.
- How high do you need to lift? Match the lift height to your benches, bunds and storage tiers — 500mm versus 800mm makes a real difference at a decanting station.
- What is in the drums? Oils, fuels and chemicals bring spill, COSHH and DSEAR considerations on top of the handling — so plan storage and containment alongside the handling gear.
Handling and storage go together
Equipment that moves and tips drums is only half the picture. Wherever drums are kept, they should sit in a sump or bund that can contain a leak — for oil storage the bund must hold at least 110% of the largest drum, or 25% of the total stored, whichever is greater. Staying compliant
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, and to assess and reduce the risk where it cannot be avoided — moving full drums by hand is exactly the kind of task these regulations target. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require that drum handling equipment is suitable for the job, maintained, and used only by trained, competent people.
