If you are buying steel storage, shelving, cages, barriers or an outdoor shelter, you will see two finishes again and again: galvanised and powder-coated. Both protect steel from rust, but they work in completely different ways and suit different jobs. Choosing the wrong one means premature corrosion, repainting, or paying for protection you do not need. This guide explains how each finish works, where each wins, and how to pick the right one for indoor and outdoor warehouse storage.
How each finish protects steel
Bare steel rusts as soon as it meets moisture and oxygen. A finish has to stop that — and the two common options do it in fundamentally different ways.
Galvanising
Galvanising coats steel in zinc, usually by hot-dip galvanising (dipping the fabricated part in molten zinc) or by using pre-galvanised sheet. The zinc does two things: it forms a physical barrier, and — crucially — it is sacrificial. Even if the coating is scratched or drilled, the surrounding zinc corrodes in preference to the steel underneath, so the exposed steel stays protected. That self-healing behaviour is why galvanising is the default for harsh, wet and outdoor environments.
Powder coating
Powder coating applies a dry polymer powder electrostatically, then cures it in an oven to form a tough, even plastic-like skin. It is a pure barrier coating: excellent while intact, but if it is chipped through to bare steel, moisture can get under the film and rust can creep. Its big advantages are appearance and choice — a hard-wearing, colour-matched, scratch-resistant finish in almost any RAL colour.
Galvanised vs powder-coated: the trade-offs
Comparing powder coat vs galvanized steel (galvanised, in UK spelling) comes down to four practical trade-offs — corrosion resistance, damage tolerance, appearance and cost:
- Corrosion resistance: Galvanising wins outdoors and in wet or chemically aggressive areas because of its sacrificial protection. Powder coating protects well indoors but relies on the film staying unbroken.
- Damage tolerance: A scratched galvanised part keeps protecting itself; a scratched powder-coated part can rust at the chip. This matters for kit that gets knocked — cages, barriers, trucks.
- Appearance: Powder coating offers any colour, a smooth finish and the option of safety colours (yellow barriers, blue storage). Galvanising gives a functional grey, spangled look.
- Cost: Broadly similar; the right choice is driven by environment and looks rather than price alone.
- Best of both: For the most demanding outdoor jobs, steel can be galvanised and then powder-coated (a "duplex" system) — sacrificial protection underneath, colour and a second barrier on top.
Which finish for which job?
A simple rule covers most cases: indoors, powder coating is usually ideal; outdoors or in wet/corrosive areas, lean towards galvanising (or duplex).
Indoor storage and workshop equipment
Lockers, workbenches, tool cabinets, shelving and most internal storage live in dry, heated buildings where a barrier coating is plenty. Powder coating is the norm here — durable, easy to clean, and available in colours that suit an office, school or clean workshop. Knocks are touched up rather than relied on to self-heal.
Outdoor shelters and external structures
Anything that lives outside faces rain, frost and UV year-round. Galvanised steel — or galvanised-then-coated — is the sensible default for the frames of smoking, cycle and bin shelters and other external structures, because a single chip should not start a rust problem on a part you cannot easily repaint.
Cages, barriers and high-impact kit
Storage cages, gas cylinder cages and impact protection take knocks by design. Safety barriers are frequently powder-coated in high-visibility yellow because the colour is the safety function — but where they sit outdoors or get scraped constantly, galvanised or duplex steel resists the resulting corrosion far better. For storage cages the choice follows the same logic: indoor mesh cages are commonly powder-coated; yard and external cages benefit from galvanising.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Where will it live? Heated indoors, unheated store, or fully outdoors? This is the single biggest factor.
- Will it get wet or splashed? Washdown areas, loading bays and external yards push you towards galvanising.
- Will it get knocked? High-impact kit favours sacrificial protection or a duplex system.
- Does colour matter? Safety colour-coding or a tidy appearance points to powder coating.
- How long does it need to last with no maintenance? The longer and the harsher the conditions, the more galvanising earns its place.
