How to Choose Warehouse Steps: A UK Buying Guide

The right warehouse steps make picking, stock-taking and maintenance faster and safer; the wrong ones gather dust in a corner or, worse, put staff at risk. This guide walks through how to choose warehouse steps for your site — the types available, the specifications that actually matter, and the UK safety rules you need to meet.

Types of warehouse steps

"Warehouse steps" is a catch-all for several quite different products. Picking the right category is the first decision:

  • Mobile safety steps — wheeled, self-supporting staircases with a top platform and handrails. The default choice for picking from racking and shelving because they move easily yet lock solid under load. Tread counts typically run from 2 up to 14 or more.
  • Podium steps — a fully guard-railed, enclosed standing platform reached by a few treads. Ideal for longer static tasks where an operator needs both hands free and a secure place to stand.
  • Platform & telescopic steps — large-platform safety steps, often with safety gates and adjustable stabilisers, plus folding telescopic versions that collapse flat for storage and transport.
  • Mobile access towers — lightweight aluminium towers for higher or longer-duration work at height, guard-railed on all sides.
  • Step ladders & combination ladders — A-frame and multi-position ladders for quick, occasional access; fibreglass versions for electrical work.

The specifications that matter

Platform height and working reach

Start from the highest point you need to reach. A useful rule of thumb is that safe working height is roughly the platform height plus about 1.8 m (average shoulder-to-fingertip reach of a standing adult). Measure to your top shelf or task, then work back to the platform height you need — don't buy more height than the job requires, as taller units are heavier and take up more floor space.

How many treads do you need?

Each tread adds roughly 250 mm of platform height, so tread count and platform height rise together. As a quick guide: 2–4 treads for low-level picking and bench work, 5–10 treads for standard pallet racking, and 11–14+ treads for high-bay racking or mezzanine access. The more treads, the larger the footprint you'll need to clear in the aisle.

Material: steel vs aluminium

Steel-framed steps are heavier, extremely robust and well suited to permanent positions in a busy warehouse. Aluminium steps are significantly lighter and easier for one person to reposition frequently, making them a good fit for mobile picking and for sites where the unit moves between areas all day. Tread surfaces are typically punched steel or anti-slip PVC for grip.

Mobility: weight-reactive castors

Most quality mobile safety steps use weight-reactive (spring-loaded) castors. When the steps are empty they roll freely; as soon as someone stands on the bottom tread, the frame settles onto rubber stops and the unit locks to the floor. This removes the need to remember a brake and is a key safety feature to look for. Handrails, gates and stability

Handrails on both sides are standard on safety steps; for work where the operator leans or handles bulky stock, look for a full platform with a self-closing safety gate and, on larger units, adjustable stabilisers or outriggers.

UK safety standards and the law

Working at height in a UK workplace is governed primarily by the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). In practice this means you must provide suitable, well-maintained access equipment for the task and inspect it regularly. Key points:

  • Choose equipment built to the relevant standard — BS EN 131 covers ladders and step ladders. Some manufacturers also hold a BSI Kitemark on their warehouse step ranges.
  • Keep a simple inspection routine: a pre-use visual check by the operator, plus periodic formal inspections logged by a competent person.
  • Make sure the unit is rated for the load and that castors lock correctly before use.

  • Ignoring the aisle. Measure your narrowest working aisle before ordering — a wide-base set of steps that can't be positioned where it's needed will simply not get used.
  • Forgetting frequency of movement. If staff reposition the steps dozens of times a day, weight matters: heavy steel in a high-movement role slows people down and tempts shortcuts.
  • Skipping the inspection routine. Even the best steps degrade — worn castors, loose handrails and damaged treads all reduce safety. Build a simple pre-use check into the daily routine.
