Pallet racking does the heavy lifting in almost every UK warehouse — and it spends its whole life within inches of forklifts, reach trucks and pallet trucks. A single careless manoeuvre can buckle an upright, and a damaged upright can compromise an entire racking run carrying tonnes of stock. Pallet racking protection is the low-cost, high-value answer: a layer of guards, barriers and floor rails that take the impact so your racking doesn't. This guide explains the main types of protection, how to choose them, and what UK regulations expect of you.
Why pallet racking protection matters
Racking is engineered to carry vertical loads, not to absorb sideways impacts. The base of the upright is the most vulnerable point on the whole structure — it is exactly where forklift wheels, forks and pallet corners pass dozens of times a day. Even a minor strike can dent or bow a leg, and a bent upright loses a disproportionate amount of its rated capacity. Because the frame carries the beams above it, damage at floor level puts everything stored higher at risk. Protection products are deliberately sacrificial: they are far cheaper to replace than a frame, and they buy you time to spot and report damage before a collapse.
Common causes of racking damage
Knowing where damage comes from tells you where to put protection. The most frequent causes on UK sites are: forklift and reach-truck strikes to the base of uprights when entering or leaving a bay; pallet-truck and pallet corners catching the front face of a leg; over-reaching or misjudged loads pushing a frame from behind; vehicles cutting corners at aisle ends; and reversing vehicles backing into end frames. Almost all of it happens in the bottom 400–600mm of the upright and at the ends of runs — which is exactly where guards and barriers earn their keep.
Types of pallet racking protection
Upright (column) protectors
These fit around or in front of the individual racking leg. Steel post protectors bolt to the floor in front of the upright and physically stop a vehicle reaching it; polymer and PU-foam wrap-around guards clip to the leg itself and absorb glancing blows. Bolt-down steel guards give the most robust protection in high-traffic aisles, while clip-on guards are quick to fit and ideal for lighter pedestrian-and-pallet-truck environments.
End-of-aisle & end-frame barriers
The ends of a racking run face the main traffic routes and turning vehicles, so they take the most hits. End-of-aisle protection is a barrier — usually a floor-bolted steel guard rail — positioned across the exposed end frame. It keeps vehicles a safe distance from the rack and absorbs the energy of a strike before it reaches the structure. A run of guard rail such as the GPC Protective Rail System, built from 100mm welded heavy-duty square tubular steel on 200 x 200mm bolt-down floor plates, is well suited to this job.
Floor-level collision barriers & guard rails
Where racking backs onto a walkway, a roller door or a busy cross-aisle, a continuous guard rail gives both a physical and a visual line. Rigid steel rail is the traditional choice; flexible polymer systems such as the McCue SafeStop GuardRail use shock-absorbing uprights to deflect and redirect forklift impacts rather than transmitting the force into the floor or the rack behind. Flexible systems excel at the corners and pinch points where vehicle strikes are most likely and most repeated.
Back & mesh protection
For double-sided runs and pick faces next to pedestrian routes, mesh back panels and rack-back guards stop loose items falling through the back of the rack into walkways — a different hazard, but part of the same goal of keeping people safe around racking.
How to choose racking protection
Match the level of protection to the level of risk:
- Traffic type and speed — fast reach trucks in narrow aisles justify heavy bolt-down steel; a low-speed pallet-truck operation may only need clip-on guards.
- Exposure — aisle ends, corners and entrances need the most robust protection; protected internal bays need less.
- Rigid vs flexible — rigid steel stops a vehicle dead and stays put; flexible polymer absorbs energy and springs back, reducing repeat-strike damage and vehicle damage.
- Fixing and floor — bolt-down guards and barriers need a sound concrete floor; check the fixing centres and that fixings are included (many steel systems are supplied without fixings).
- Height and visibility — guards should cover the vulnerable lower section of the upright; high-visibility yellow is standard for a reason.
In practice most sites combine approaches: upright protectors on every exposed leg, end barriers across aisle ends, and a run of guard rail wherever racking meets a walkway.
Pallet racking protection and UK regulations
What regulations cover racking?
Racking safety in the UK sits under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), which require work equipment to be maintained in safe working order. The industry standard is SEMA (the Storage Equipment Manufacturers' Association) guidance, and HSE document HSG76 (Warehousing and storage) sets out good practice. None of these mandates a specific brand of guard, but they collectively require you to assess the risk of impact damage and manage it — and physical protection is the standard control.
What is end-of-aisle racking protection?
End-of-aisle protection is a barrier fitted across the exposed end frame of a racking run, where it faces traffic routes and turning vehicles. Because aisle ends are struck most often, this is usually the first place to protect — typically with a floor-bolted steel guard rail set far enough in front of the frame to take a hit without being pushed into the rack.
Does pallet racking need to be certified?
There is no single legal "certificate" for racking, but SEMA guidance recommends a documented rack safety inspection by a competent person at least annually (a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector), alongside regular in-house visual checks. Inspections record and risk-rate any damage using a traffic-light system (green/amber/red), and a red item means that bay should be offloaded and isolated until repaired. Protection products reduce the amount of damage those inspections find.
Does pallet racking need to be bolted to the floor?
Yes — SEMA guidance is that racking frames should be fixed to the floor with appropriate anchors, both for stability and so that a struck frame is held in place rather than toppling. The same principle applies to most steel protection barriers and post guards, which bolt down to a sound concrete floor to do their job.
A simple racking-protection checklist
- Protect every upright exposed to vehicle traffic, prioritising aisle ends and corners.
- Fit floor-bolted barriers or guard rail where racking meets walkways, doors and cross-aisles.
- Use flexible impact systems at high-repeat-strike pinch points; rigid steel for fixed boundaries.
- Keep protection high-visibility and inspect it — a damaged guard has done its job and may need replacing.
- Combine physical protection with annual SEMA-style inspections and routine in-house checks.
