How to choose a picking trolley

Number of tiers. Match shelf count to how many orders a picker handles at once and the size of the items. Small-part picking benefits from three or four shelves or a tote rack; bulkier picks need fewer, deeper levels.

Deck and shelf size. Larger shelves carry more but make the trolley wider and harder to manoeuvre in tight aisles. Measure your narrowest aisle and your racking bay before specifying.

Load capacity. Check both the total trolley capacity and the per-shelf rating. Overloading a single tier is a common cause of tipping and shelf failure.

Castors and wheels. Smooth, swivel castors aid manoeuvrability in tight aisles; larger wheels roll more easily over thresholds and uneven floors. Look for braked castors where the trolley will be parked on a slope or loaded at height.

Under PUWER 1998, work equipment including trolleys must be suitable, maintained and used correctly — check castors and welds periodically and withdraw any trolley with a seized wheel or damaged shelf.
