Taurus Utility Workbenches

Taurus Utility Workbenches

Taurus is GPC Industries' utility workbench range — a lighter, cleaner-finished bench for environments where a heavy steel engineering bench would be overkill. Typical homes for them are factories, laboratories, retail back-of-house and schools: places that need a solid, wipeable working surface with lockable storage, rather than a bench built to take a vice and a hammer.

What you get

The Taurus Utility Workbench with Two Single Drawers is built around a 20 mm high density laminate worktop with 3 mm PVC edging, on a powder-coated frame in Iridium Silver. The drawer sets come complete with central locking and are rated at 50 kg per drawer — enough for tooling, test kit, consumables or documentation, and secure enough to leave in a shared room overnight.

Laminate or timber — which surface?

The choice of worktop is the choice that matters most on a bench. High density laminate is smooth, easy to wipe down, resistant to most workshop fluids and pleasant to work on for long periods — which is exactly why it suits labs, schools and assembly work. What it will not do is take repeated impact or hot work; for that you want a beech, MPX or steel top from a heavier range. If your work is light assembly, inspection, testing, packing or teaching, Taurus is the right specification. If it is engineering, fabrication or anything involving a vice, look at a heavier bench.

Sizing and setting up

Two practical points when specifying. First, working height: a standing bench that is too low is the single most common cause of back complaints in a workshop, so check the bench height against the task and the operator, not against the room. Second, drawer allocation: with 50 kg per drawer and central locking, it is usually better to give each user a drawer than to share a bank — accountability keeps tooling where it should be.
