Aluminium Scaffold Towers: How to Choose an Access Tower

An aluminium scaffold tower gets you working safely at heights that steps and podiums can't reach — with a full guarded platform rather than a ladder rung to stand on. But tower specifications vary widely, and the right choice depends on working height, how often the tower moves, and who's assembling it. This guide walks through the decisions — certification, heights, folding vs modular formats and the rules that apply — based on the Climb-It access towers we supply. Tower, steps or podium?

First, confirm a tower is the right tool. For picking and short-duration access inside a warehouse, mobile safety steps are usually quicker and safer to reposition. For prolonged low-level work, a podium or low-level work platform keeps you enclosed at waist height. Check the certification: BS EN 1004

BS EN 1004 is the product standard for mobile access towers. It governs the tower's structural design, platform, guardrails and stabilisers. The Climb-It Ultra and UniPro towers are certified to BSEN1004:2004 — if you're comparing towers elsewhere, treat certification as non-negotiable for professional use, and be wary of lightweight "DIY towers" sold without it.

Why aluminium?

Nearly all mobile access towers are aluminium for a simple reason: weight. A tower gets assembled, climbed, moved and re-assembled constantly, and every kilogram matters when components are being lifted overhead during the build. Aluminium keeps the structure light enough for one or two people to handle without sacrificing rigidity, doesn't rust when the tower lives outdoors or in a washdown area, and shrugs off the knocks of site life. The trade-off against steel scaffolding is maximum scale — but for working heights up to around 8 metres, a certified aluminium tower does the job with a fraction of the labour.

Work out the platform height you need

Tower heights are quoted as platform height — where your feet stand. As a rule of thumb, your working height is roughly the platform height plus 2 metres of reach. Measure the task height, subtract 2 metres, and that's the platform height to look for. Buying more height than you need adds weight, cost and assembly time.

Think about the floor as well as the height. Castors need a firm, level surface — a warehouse slab is ideal; rough ground outdoors calls for careful levelling and stabiliser use. And check the built footprint against the space available: a tower with stabilisers deployed takes considerably more floor area than its platform size suggests, which matters in tight aisles and plant rooms.

  • Platform height — task height minus ~2 m of reach.

The rules: Work at Height Regulations and competence

Tower work falls under the Work at Height Regulations 2005: work at height must be planned, supervised and carried out by competent people, and HSE publishes specific guidance on tower scaffolds. Whoever assembles the tower should be trained to do so — PASMA courses are the recognised route in the UK — and the tower should be assembled, used and inspected in line with the manufacturer's instruction manual. Safe use: the habits that matter

A certified tower is only as safe as the way it's used. The essentials: assemble strictly to the manufacturer's instruction manual, with all guardrails, toe boards and stabilisers fitted before anyone works from the platform. Lock all castors before climbing. Never move a tower with people, tools or materials on it — clear the platform, move it, re-lock, re-check. Climb on the inside of the tower, never up the outside frame. Inspect the tower before each use and after anything that could affect its stability (it's been moved, the weather's turned, a component's taken a knock), and take damaged components out of service rather than working around them. None of this is onerous — it's a two-minute discipline that prevents the most common tower incidents HSE reports: falls during assembly, tower overturns from unlocked castors or missing stabilisers, and platform falls where guardrails were left off "just for a quick job".

What's the difference between platform height and working height?

Platform height is where you stand; working height adds your reach — roughly 2 metres. An 8.1 m working height tower has its platform around 6 m.

Do I need PASMA training to use a scaffold tower?

The regulations require competence rather than naming a specific card, but PASMA training is the recognised way to demonstrate it for tower assembly and use, and many sites insist on it.

Can I use a mobile access tower outdoors?

Yes — the Ultra range is designed for indoor and outdoor use — but wind matters. Follow the manufacturer's limits on outdoor use and stabiliser configuration, and never move a tower with people or materials on the platform.

Can one person assemble a scaffold tower?

Only if the tower is designed for it. The Climb-It UniPro is built specifically for single-person assembly — modular sections sized for one pair of hands, telescopic stabilisers and transport wheels. Larger modular towers are quicker and safer as a two-person build.
