An electric tug is a compact, pedestrian-operated machine that pushes or pulls wheeled loads far heavier than one person could safely move by hand. Grip the tiller, connect to the load, and the powered drive does the work — moving roll cages, trolleys, wheeled bins, trailers and platform bases across a warehouse, hospital corridor or production floor without a forklift. What an electric tug is (and isn't)

An electric tug — also called a powered tug, tow tug or pedestrian mover — is a battery-powered drive unit an operator walks behind. It couples to a wheeled load with a hitch, jaw or push-plate, then uses its own motor and weighted drive wheel to move that load. The operator steers and controls speed from the tiller; the tug supplies the muscle.

It is not a forklift and it is not a pallet truck. A tug doesn't lift a load off the ground — the load stays on its own wheels or castors. That's the whole point: instead of buying a ride-on tow tractor or risking manual pushing injuries, you add a walk-behind unit that turns a heavy rolling load into something one person can move and control. For lifting and stacking palletised goods you still want a pallet truck or powered stacker; the tug is for moving things that already roll.

Where electric tugs earn their place

Tugs make sense wherever staff are shifting heavy wheeled loads repeatedly, over distance, or up slopes:

How to choose an electric tug

Work through five questions and the specification falls into place.

1. How heavy is the load — and on what surface?

Rated capacity is the headline figure, but the surface matters just as much. A tug rated to move 1,000kg on smooth, level concrete will manage less up a ramp or across rough, sloping or wet ground, because it relies on the weight over its drive wheel for traction. 2. What are you connecting to?

3. How far, how often, how many shifts?

4. Are there slopes or thresholds?

5. Who will use it, and how tight is the space?

Pedestrian tugs are compact and manoeuvrable, but aisle width, turning circles and operator training all shape the right choice. A walk-behind unit needs room for the operator as well as the load.

Safety and the law

An electric tug is work equipment, so it falls under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER): it must be suitable for the task, maintained in efficient working order, and used only by people who have been properly trained. Introducing a tug is usually driven by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 — the tug is the engineering control that removes a hazardous push-or-pull task your risk assessment has flagged.

Sensible operating practice: keep to walking pace, never let anyone ride the load or the tug unless it is designed for it, watch for pedestrians at junctions, and take extra care on ramps and slopes where a heavy rolling load carries momentum. Charge and store the unit per the manufacturer's instructions, and take any tug with a fault out of service until it's repaired. How much can one person move with an electric tug? Far more than by hand — our range moves loads from 1,000kg up to 1,500kg on suitable surfaces. The safe figure on the day depends on the surface, gradient and coupling, so size to your heaviest routine load with headroom.

Is an electric tug the same as an electric tow tractor? No. A tow tractor is usually a ride-on vehicle; a pedestrian electric tug is a compact walk-behind unit for indoor and mixed environments where a ride-on is too big or a forklift isn't warranted.

Do I need a licence to use one? There's no separate statutory licence as there is for counterbalance forklifts, but PUWER requires operators to be trained and competent, and your insurer or site rules may set their own training standard.

Can a tug replace a pallet truck? Only for moving wheeled loads. A tug doesn't lift, so for palletised goods you'll still want a pallet truck or stacker; many sites run both.
