Compressed gas cylinders are one of the most hazardous items in any yard or workshop – pressurised, often flammable, and dangerous if they topple or overheat. A gas bottle storage cage keeps cylinders upright, secure, ventilated and away from ignition sources, which is exactly what UK guidance expects. This guide explains the main types of cage, how to size one, and the features that matter when you choose. Why store gas cylinders in a cage?
Cylinders should be stored outdoors wherever possible, in a well-ventilated area, kept upright and restrained, with full and empty bottles segregated and clearly marked. A purpose-built cage does several jobs at once: it ventilates naturally through open mesh, restrains cylinders against falling, keeps them in a designated location away from buildings and drains, deters theft, and carries the required hazard signage. Loose cylinders propped against a wall fail almost every one of those points – which is why the HSE and most insurers expect proper storage.
The main types of gas cylinder cage
1. Static and mobile cylinder cages
The workhorse of the range. Our GPC Grenadier® gas cylinder cages are built in angle iron with the sides, ends and top infilled with metal strip, on an inverted-angle base. They have hinged lockable doors with a padlock provision and come complete with a highly-flammable sign. Internal size is 1560 × 840mm with 720mm usable distance between shelves, and they are designed to carry up to sixteen “calor gas” type cylinders. The mobile version adds a push handle at one end so a part-full cage can be repositioned; the static version stays put. Choose mobile if cylinders move between bays, static for a fixed compound.
2. Lock-up cages with a pallet base
Where security and relocation both matter, a pallet-based lock-up cage is the answer. The GPC Grenadier® lock-up cages are manufactured in angle iron infilled with tough iron mesh, with provision for a padlock, a highly-flammable sign and a retaining chain to hold cylinders. They come either permanently fixed (base drilled for floor fixing points) or on a pallet base so a forklift can lift and move the whole loaded cage. Depths of 1095mm and 1715mm cover smaller and larger cylinder counts. Note that the pallet-based units need a forklift to unload – they are not a two-person lift.
3. Knock-down (folding) cages
If access to your site is tight – a standard doorway, a goods lift, or a unit you may reconfigure later – a knock-down cage ships flat and bolts together on site. Our GPC Grenadier® knock-down cages use robust mesh panels (25 × 25mm or 50 × 50mm depending on model) that bolt into a strong, rigid frame, topped with a galvanised roof and closed with a hasp-and-staple locking facility. Larger models come with a pallet base incorporating fork pockets, and floor-grid panel versions are available where you want a solid footing. Sizes run from roughly 1007mm wide up to 1954 × 2045mm for bigger holdings.
4. Cylinder pallet cages for transport
For moving cylinders rather than just storing them, a cylinder pallet cage is fully welded with supporting sides and a central section, a non-slip steel floor to make loading and unloading safer, and a retaining chain or strap. The 1200 × 1050 × 995mm models are designed to be moved by a pallet truck with the standard 680mm fork width, so cylinders travel as a secure, contained load.
5. Walk-in cylinder stores
For larger holdings or higher-risk gases, a walk-in store steps up the protection. Our GPC gas cylinder stores are built with 90-minute fire-resistant panels manufactured in accordance with DIN 4102 and EN 13501, with lockable doors and configurations from 12 up to 48 mesh or fire-rated doors. Double-width stores also take gas cylinder pallets, and they suit all gas types. This is the option when separation distances are hard to achieve, when you store a significant quantity, or when fire performance is specified.
How to choose the right cage
Five questions settle most specifications:
- How many cylinders, and what size? Count your peak holding – full and empty – not your average. Remember full and empty bottles should be segregated, so you may need two compartments or two cages. A single Grenadier carrier holds up to sixteen calor-type cylinders as a reference point.
- Static, mobile or relocatable? Fixed compound → static or floor-fixed lock-up. Cylinders that move between work areas → mobile cage with a handle. Whole-cage moves by forklift → pallet-based unit.
- How secure does it need to be? All our cages take a padlock; lock-up cages and walk-in stores add the most theft and tamper resistance for high-value or high-risk gases.
- Painted or galvanised? Painted finishes suit indoor or covered areas; hot-dip galvanised is the better choice for outdoor, coastal or wash-down environments where corrosion is a concern. Most ranges offer both.
- Indoors, outdoors, or fire-rated? Outdoor open mesh is ideal for ventilation. Where you can’t achieve separation distances or you store larger quantities, move up to a fire-resistant walk-in store.
Features that matter
Beyond size, look for: a retaining chain or strap so cylinders can’t fall; natural ventilation through open mesh or strip infill (never store cylinders in a sealed box); a padlock provision and, ideally, a highly-flammable sign supplied as standard; fixing points or a pallet base appropriate to how the cage will be sited; and a galvanised roof on outdoor units to shed rain. These are the details that turn a cage from a box into compliant storage.
Siting and safe use
Place the cage outdoors where practical, away from buildings, boundaries, drains and ignition sources, on firm level ground, and keep the area clear of combustible materials. Store cylinders upright and restrained, segregate full from empty, segregate incompatible gases (for example oxidants from flammables), and keep the hazard signage visible. Always carry out your own COSHH and DSEAR risk assessment for the gases you hold – the cage is one control among several. Frequently asked questions

Painted or galvanised – which lasts longer outdoors? Hot-dip galvanised resists corrosion far better in outdoor, coastal and wash-down settings and is the usual choice for permanent external storage. Painted units are fine under cover.
