Perfo Panels vs Louvre Panels: Choosing a Workshop Tool and Parts Storage System

Two panel systems dominate industrial workshop storage in the UK, they look broadly similar on a supplier's product page, and they do genuinely different jobs. Get the choice wrong and you end up with a rack full of hooks and nowhere to put fixings, or a wall of bins and nowhere to hang a torque wrench.

The short version: perforated panels take hooks, and hooks hold tools. Louvred panels take bins, and bins hold parts. Everything else in this guide is detail on top of that one distinction.

One clarification first, because the phrase is ambiguous. If you searched "louvre panel" looking for ventilation grilles, door louvres or pergola slats, this is not that. This guide is about workshop storage panel systems — steel panels that carry hooks or hook-on bins for tools and small components.

What a perfo panel is

A perfo panel is a steel sheet pressed with a regular grid of small perforations. Hooks, holders and brackets clip into those perforations and can be moved to any other position on the grid.

The critical detail is the fixing, not the holes. Bott's Perfo range uses the Perfolock fixing system, which lets hooks be attached, removed and repositioned quickly without tools. That sounds like a convenience feature. It is actually the reason the format survives contact with a real workshop: tool layouts change, and a board that is a nuisance to rearrange gets rearranged once and then tolerated for a decade.

Perfo suits anything that hangs — spanners, drivers, pliers, air tools, cables, measuring equipment. It gives you visibility at a glance, which is the whole argument for a tool board over a drawer: you can see what is missing without opening anything.

What a louvre panel is

A louvred panel is a steel sheet formed into a series of angled horizontal ledges. Plastic bins hook over those ledges and sit at a slight tilt so their open face points towards you.

Bins, not hooks, are the point. A louvre panel is a parts store — fixings, fittings, seals, terminals, consumables, anything you count out rather than pick up whole. The bins supplied with Bott's louvre kits are high-density polyethylene, reinforced and stackable, resistant to most acids, alkalis and lubricants, and rated from −35°C to +80°C, which matters more than it sounds in a workshop where bins collect oil and sit near a roller shutter through a February.

Louvre also has a quiet advantage over shelving for small parts: bin positions are not fixed by shelf pitch. Change your bin sizes and the layout adapts, rather than leaving you with 200 mm of dead air above every row.

Combi panels exist because most workshops need both

The honest answer for a general maintenance bay, a fitting shop or a service department is usually "both", and that is why combination units are made. If you are specifying a first unit and genuinely cannot predict the split, a combi is the low-regret choice. If you already know the station is a tool station or a parts station, buy the single-format unit — you get more of the surface you actually need.

The second decision: static rack or trolley?

Panel format is only half the specification. The other half is whether the storage stays put or follows the work.

Freestanding racks

Double-sided racks on a wide stable base suit a fixed store, a tool crib or a central point serving several benches. The double-sided arrangement is what makes a rack worth its floor space — it stores twice as much per square metre as a wall-mounted panel of the same area, provided you can leave access on both sides. Against a wall, half of it is wasted.

Panel trolleys

Trolleys put the same panel area on 125 mm castors, two of them braked swivel wheels, with a push–pull handle and an integrated base tray. All the Bott panel trolleys share a 1000 × 650 × 1600 mm footprint:

A useful detail across the trolley range: panels may be mounted vertically or at an incline. Inclining the panels tips the stored items towards the operator, which is worth doing on the working side of a trolley used seated or at a low bench. Decide it at assembly rather than living with the default.

Which one

Ask where the work happens. If the job comes to the bench, buy a rack and put it where the benches are. If the work is a machine, a vehicle or an installation that the fitter walks to, buy a trolley — a static rack twenty metres from the job produces a fitter carrying an armful of tools, which is exactly the habit the system was bought to remove.

Perfo, louvre or pegboard?

This is the question behind most searches for a tool board, so it is worth answering plainly. Pegboard — the perforated hardboard sold for domestic garages and sheds — is cheap and fine for light hand tools in a home workshop. We do not supply it, and in an industrial setting it has two problems: the board itself deforms under sustained load, and the pegs work loose and drop tools when the board is knocked.

Steel perfo is the industrial equivalent of the same idea: same grid principle, a structural material behind it, and a positive fixing rather than a friction peg. If a domestic pegboard is doing the job in your workshop and nothing has fallen off it, there is no reason to change. If you are replacing pegboard for the third time, that is the reason.

Shadow boards — boards printed or cut with the outline of each tool so a missing item is obvious — are a different product again, usually made to order against a specific tool list. We do not supply them. You can achieve much of the same visual-control effect on a perfo panel by fixing a hook per tool and holding the layout, but if formal tool control is the requirement, a purpose-made shadow board is the honest answer.

Specifying: what to work out before you order

  1. Count the part numbers, not the parts. A louvre panel's capacity is a number of bin positions. Two hundred M8 bolts occupy one bin; twenty different fasteners occupy twenty. It is the variety that sizes the rack.
  2. Count the tools that genuinely live at the station. Hooks are cheap and panels are not. A 60- or 80-piece hook kit sounds generous until someone hangs the whole toolkit on it.
  3. Decide single- or double-sided early. Double-sided is the better value per square metre but needs clear access both sides — it cannot go against a wall.
  4. Choose the bin mix, not the bin count. A kit of 240 small bins and a kit of 120 larger bins occupy the same rack and suit completely different stores. Read the mix.
  5. Pick a colour convention and stick to it. The Bott range is supplied in Light Grey, Anthracite Grey, Gentian Blue and Crimson Red. Colour is free organisation — one colour per department, or per shift, costs nothing and saves arguments.

Two honest caveats

Load figures. Panel and hook capacities are not published across this range in the detail that shelving and racking capacities are. If you intend to hang something genuinely heavy — a large air tool, a cable drum, a fixture — confirm the figure at quotation rather than assuming it. Assembly. The trolleys are supplied for self-assembly and carry a 10-year extended guarantee. Budget the build time into the installation rather than the unboxing.

What panel systems do not solve

Panel storage is open storage. It is visible, fast and completely unsecured. Fitting panels into the wider bench setup

Panel storage works best as one element of a station rather than a purchase on its own. In practice a well-specified bay is a workbench at the right height, drawers underneath for what must be enclosed, and panel storage in front of or beside the operator for what should be visible.
