Roll Cages & Roll Containers: A Warehouse Distribution Guide

Roll cages and roll containers are the unsung workhorses of retail and warehouse distribution. Wheel a loaded cage off a lorry tail-lift, push it to the shop floor or pick face, unload, fold or nest it, and send it back — it is the fastest way to move mixed goods through a supply chain without a forklift. This guide explains the main types, how to choose the right one, and — just as importantly — how to load and move them safely, because a fully loaded roll cage can weigh as much as a small motorbike.

What is a roll cage (and is it the same as a roll container)?

The terms are used interchangeably. A roll cage, roll container, roll pallet or distribution cage is a wheeled, caged trolley designed to hold and transport goods as a single unit. Most are built from welded steel mesh or tube on a steel base fitted with four castors, sized roughly to a standard pallet footprint so they load efficiently into vehicles and lifts. They sit somewhere between a pallet and a trolley: like a pallet they consolidate a load; like a trolley they move on their own wheels, so no pump truck or forklift is needed for the last leg of the journey.

The main types of roll cage

  • Two, three and four-sided cages. The number of mesh sides governs how secure and stable the load is. Two-sided (open-front) cages are quick to load and pick from; three and four-sided cages hold loose or stacked items more securely and are the norm for transport over distance.
  • Nestable "A-frame" cages. The sides taper so empty cages nest inside one another, dramatically cutting the storage and return-transport space needed — important if cages travel back to a depot empty.
  • Demountable cages. The sides and base separate for flat storage, a good compromise where space is tight but you want full four-sided security in use.
  • Security and retail roll cages. Fitted with a hinged, lockable door or shutter to protect high-value or controlled stock in transit and on the shop floor.

  • Dollies and roll pallets. A low wheeled base with little or no caging, used where goods are already boxed or shrink-wrapped into a stable stack.

How to choose the right roll cage

  • Load weight and capacity. Match the rated capacity to your heaviest typical load with a sensible margin. Many distribution cages are rated around 500 kg — never exceed the figure on the data plate, and remember the cage itself is heavy before you add anything.
  • Number of sides. More sides means more security and load retention but slower loading and picking. Choose to suit your goods and how far they travel.
  • Nestable vs demountable vs fixed. If cages return empty, nestable or demountable designs save serious space and transport cost. If they stay loaded in a loop, a fixed four-sided cage is simpler and more rigid.
  • Base and castors. Look at castor diameter and material: larger wheels roll more easily over thresholds, tail-lift edges and yard surfaces, while braked castors help on slopes. A solid, flat base protects smaller items.
  • Security. For high-value, pharmaceutical or age-restricted stock, specify a lockable door or shutter and consider a fully enclosed security storage cage for static holding.
  • Environment. Galvanised or zinc-plated finishes resist corrosion in wet, chilled or outdoor use; powder-coated steel suits clean indoor distribution.

Moving roll cages safely

Roll cages are behind a significant number of warehouse and retail manual-handling injuries, and the HSE provides specific guidance on their design, loading and movement. The risks rise sharply with weight: a fully loaded cage can reach around 500 kg, which is far beyond what one person can safely control on anything but flat, even ground.

  • Push, don't pull. Pushing keeps the load in front of you, uses stronger leg and trunk muscles, and protects the back and shoulders. Pulling a heavy cage is a common cause of injury.
  • Load heavy at the bottom, distribute evenly. Keeping the centre of gravity low and balanced stops the cage becoming top-heavy and tipping during turns or over thresholds.
  • Mind ramps and uneven ground. Inclines, tail-lifts and broken yard surfaces are the highest-risk moments. Never let a heavy cage run away on a slope, and avoid manhandling cages up ramps.
  • Use power for heavy or repetitive moves. Where cages are heavy, numerous, or moved over ramps and long distances, a powered mover or electric tug removes the manual effort and the injury risk almost entirely.
  • Train your team. Movement of roll cages should be covered by manual-handling training and risk assessment under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). Inspect cages regularly and take damaged ones out of service.
