Cloakroom Benches with Coat Hooks

The hook bench is the classic cloakroom format: a seat at sitting height with a hook rail on the frame above it, so coats, bags and kit hang directly over the person using them. It is the configuration most schools, sports clubs and staff welfare areas end up specifying, and for good reason — it is quick to use, needs no hangers, and copes with a whole class arriving at once.

Why hooks rather than a rail

Hooks and overhead rails solve different problems. A hook takes a coat, a PE bag or a rucksack in one motion and holds it whatever shape it is. A rail needs a hanger, which means supplying hangers, which means replacing hangers. Hooks are the right answer for high-turnover, short-dwell spaces: school cloakrooms, sports changing, shift changeovers. Rails come into their own where garments are long, need to hang uncreased, and stay put for hours.

The other practical difference is height. Hook benches are available across all three user heights, so the hooks land where the users can reach them.

What is in this range

Six hook configurations, all built on the UK-manufactured Probe frame — welded tubular mild steel, powder-coated, seat slats in beech hardwood or black polymer, full ironmongery included:

• Single sided with coat hooks — 375mm deep, against a wall.
• Single sided hook with undershelf — adds a shelf under the seat for boots and bags.
• Single sided hook with baskets — wire baskets instead of a shelf, for kit that needs airflow.
• Double sided with coat hooks — 710mm deep island unit, central hook rail serving both faces.
• Double sided hook with undershelf and double sided hook with baskets — the same island format with under-seat storage.

Sizes and heights

Hook benches stand 1,840mm overall to the top of the frame. Lengths run 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000mm, and the range is available in all three Probe heights — Infant, Junior and Senior — which is what makes it the practical choice for a primary or nursery cloakroom. Both the overhead rail and low seat configurations are Senior height only, so if you are fitting for younger pupils, specify from this range.

Specifying the run

Work out hook count from headcount, not wall length: count the peak number of users in the room at one time and add a margin, then choose bench lengths to suit. Combining a 2,000mm and a 1,000mm unit is usually neater than forcing one long run into a wall it does not quite fit.

Single sided benches fix back to the wall, double sided units fix to the floor — either way, the fixing is what carries the hanging load, so check the substrate before delivery. Frames come in red, yellow, blue, green, black, white or silver for colour-coding year groups or departments, and black polymer slats are the sensible slat choice for wet changing areas.
