Cloakroom Benches with Overhead Rail

An overhead rail bench carries a full-width hanging rail at the top of the frame, above the seat. Garments go on hangers rather than hooks, which keeps them hanging straight and full length — the format for staff changing rooms, sports pavilions, theatres and anywhere uniforms or suits need to come off a shift looking the way they went on.

Rail or hooks?

Choose the rail when garments are long, need to keep their shape, and stay hung for a whole shift or session. Choose coat hooks when the room turns over fast, users arrive in a crowd, and what is being hung is a mix of coats, bags and kit that will not go on a hanger anyway.

Two practical points people miss with rails. First, hangers are consumable — decide who supplies and replaces them before you specify. Second, a rail with everything hung on it uses its full length; a hook rail can take a bag over a coat on the same hook. For raw capacity in the same run, hooks hold more.

What is in this range

Six overhead rail configurations on the UK-manufactured Probe frame — welded tubular mild steel, powder-coated, beech hardwood or black polymer seat slats, full ironmongery included:

Single sided with overhead rail — 375mm deep, wall-fixed.
Single sided overhead rail with undershelf — adds a shelf below the seat for shoes and bags.
Single overhead rail with baskets — wire baskets under the seat instead of a shelf.
Double sided with overhead rail — 710mm deep island unit, rail down the centre serving both sides.
Double sided overhead rail with undershelf and double overhead rail with baskets — the island format with under-seat storage.

Sizes and heights — read this before specifying

Rail benches stand 1,840mm overall, with lengths of 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000mm. The single sided units are 375mm deep, the double sided 710mm.

Important: the overhead rail configurations are supplied in Senior height only. Probe's Infant and Junior heights are available on the hook, undershelf and basket benches, but not on the rail models. If you are specifying for a primary school or nursery cloakroom, the hook range is the one to work from.

Installation notes

A loaded rail puts a real horizontal load into the frame, so fixing matters more here than on a seat-only bench. Single sided units fix back to the wall and need a sound substrate — resin anchors into blockwork, or noggins behind plasterboard. Double sided island units fix to the floor, and want setting out on a drawing before delivery.

Head height is the other check. At 1,840mm the frame will clear most doorways in use but not necessarily in transit, and a rail run under a low soffit or a sloping ceiling needs measuring properly. Frames come in seven colours, and black polymer slats are the better slat choice in wet or humid rooms — poolside, showers, outdoor sports changing.
