EN 131 is the European standard for ladders and steps. It splits into two duty ratings: EN 131 Professional for workplace use and EN 131 Non-Professional for domestic. The professional rating involves tougher strength and durability testing. If steps are being used at work, professional rating is what you should be specifying, and a lot of cheaper warehouse steps quietly are not.

Folding steps or fixed mobile steps?

Folding wins on storage. If the steps are used occasionally and need to live out of the way between jobs, folding is the right call. Fixed mobile steps feel more solid underfoot and stand up to constant daily use better. If they will be parked in the same aisle permanently, buy fixed and spend the difference on a bigger platform.

Do you need the spring gates?

If anyone is working at height with both hands occupied, yes. An open platform relies on the user remembering where the edge is. Spring gates close on their own, which means they are shut even when someone is distracted. It is the single feature most worth having on steps used by more than one person.
