Steel or polyethylene drum storage?

It comes down to what is in the drums. Polyethylene resists acids and aggressive chemicals that corrode steel from the inside, where you cannot see the damage until the sump leaks. Steel takes physical abuse better and lasts longer outdoors in a busy yard. If you are storing oils and fuels, steel is usually the better buy. If you are storing chemicals, check compatibility first and polyethylene is often the only safe answer.

Why does the cover matter?

An uncovered sump outdoors fills with rainwater. A sump holding 200 litres of rain has almost no containment capacity left when you actually need it, and you then have contaminated water to dispose of as waste. The cover keeps the sump empty and available, which is the whole point of having one.
