The Owner's Insights on the Smoking Shelter
The compliance point is what most people are actually buying. GPC state this shelter complies with the Smoking Regulations 2007, which is the thing that determines whether your staff smoking area is lawful or whether you are the one in trouble when someone complains.
Sixteen millimetre triple wall polycarbonate on the sides and a PVC roof. The panels are fire resistant, which matters more here than on a cycle shelter for reasons that do not need spelling out. Polycarbonate is also roughly two hundred times stronger than glass under impact, so it survives a shelter that gets used late at night.
Honest practical note: it must be bolted down on a prepared level concrete base. That is not optional and it is not something you do after the lorry leaves. Sort the base first.
Why You'll Love this Smoking Shelter
- Complies with the Smoking Regulations 2007: GPC state compliance, which is the whole point of installing a designated shelter.
- Fire resistant panels: the right specification for an area where people are using lighters and cigarettes.
- 16mm triple wall polycarbonate sides: high impact strength, roughly 200 times stronger than glass.
- Curved roof with drainage gutters: water runs to the ends rather than off the front edge onto people.
- Heavy gauge steel bolted framework: assembles on site and comes apart again if you relocate.
- On site construction available: GPC can build it for you rather than leaving you a pile of panels.
Why You Should Consider a GPC Shelter
Triple wall rather than twin wall on the sides, which is a meaningful step up in rigidity and insulation over the standard specification used on most shelters at this size. GPC also offer on site construction, which is worth asking about if you have nobody to put it up.

What makes a smoking shelter compliant?
The Smoke-free legislation that came into force in England in 2007 restricts smoking in enclosed and substantially enclosed workplaces. A compliant outdoor shelter is one that is open enough not to count as substantially enclosed, which is why these have open sides rather than being a sealed box. GPC state this model complies.
How the rules apply to your particular site, including where the shelter can sit relative to doors and windows, depends on your premises and your local authority's view. Check with your local authority environmental health team if you are unsure, and call us on 020 3004 1152 to talk through what other sites have done.
What base do you need?
A prepared, level concrete base sized to the 2400 x 2000mm footprint. The shelter must be bolted down. Do not plan to stand it on tarmac, paving or compacted hardcore: it is a structure with a roof and it needs to be anchored properly.
Order the perch at the same time
GPC offer an optional perch seat. If you order it separately afterwards an additional carriage charge may apply, so decide at the point of order rather than later. Ring us on 020 3004 1152 and we will add it to the same delivery.
Delivery and installation
15 to 20 day lead time. A forklift and one member of staff are needed to unload the panelled sections. On site construction is available from GPC if you would rather not build it yourself.
GPC Industries made-to-order: drum stores, Grenadier security cages, hazardous-substance cabinets, sheet and bar racks, smoking and cycle shelters, custom workbenches and bespoke configurations are built per order and typically delivered in 10–20 working days from order acceptance.
Larger units, oversized cages and project work may extend further. Lead time confirmed at order acceptance.
Delivered by UK pallet freight. Note: additional surcharges apply to Scottish Highlands, Islands and remote postcodes. For bulk orders or site-specific configurations, contact us.
