The Owner's Insights on the Polycarbonate Cycle Shelter
Sixteen millimetre twinwall polycarbonate rather than steel panels, and the reason people choose it is light. A shelter you can see into and out of feels safe to use on a dark February evening in a way a steel box does not. If your cycle shelter is on a staff route or anywhere overlooked, this is usually the better specification.
Twinwall is the point, not just polycarbonate. The twin skin is far more rigid and impact resistant than single sheet, and it does not drum in heavy rain the way thin sheet does.
Same seven bike staggered layout and curved roof with gutters as the steel version. Honest trade-off: polycarbonate will not take deliberate abuse as well as galvanised steel, so for an exposed or unsupervised position the steel version is the safer buy.
Why You'll Love this Cycle Shelter
- 16mm twinwall polycarbonate roof and sides: daylight through the shelter, so it feels safe to use after dark.
- Fits up to 7 bikes: staggered storage keeps handlebars clear, so you get the full seven in.
- Curved roof with drainage gutters: runs water to the ends rather than over the entrance.
- Heavy gauge steel bolted framework: the structure is steel, only the panels are polycarbonate.
- Twinwall rather than single sheet: more rigid, more impact resistant and quieter in rain.
Why You Should Consider a GPC Cycle Shelter
GPC use a steel framework under the polycarbonate rather than building the whole thing from plastic sections, so the structural strength is the same as the galvanised version. Bolted assembly means it comes apart and moves if you change site.

Polycarbonate or galvanised panels?
Polycarbonate for visibility and natural light, which matters most where the shelter is used in the dark or where being able to see in and out is a security consideration. Galvanised steel for maximum durability in exposed or unsupervised positions. We stock both and the right answer depends entirely on where it is going, not on which costs more.
Why twinwall rather than single skin?
Twinwall has two surfaces with a structured core between them. It is substantially stiffer than single sheet of the same weight, takes an impact without shattering, and is noticeably quieter under heavy rain. On a shelter people stand under, the noise difference alone is worth the specification.
