The Owner's Insights on the HD Forklift Safety Cage

The first thing you notice about this one is the weight of it. It is fully welded rather than bolted, and at 1260mm across the platform there is room for a person and their tools without anyone shuffling sideways to turn round. The gate opens inwards and pulls itself shut on a spring latch, so it closes whether or not the operator remembers to close it.

Most of our customers buy a forklift safety cage for one reason: something has failed at height and it needs sorting today. A blocked gutter, a dead light fitting over a racking run, an inspection nobody scheduled. For that, a forklift access platform you already own beats waiting on a hired MEWP.

Be clear on what it is not. A forklift cage is for unplanned and exceptional work only. If you are going up every week for stock counts or planned maintenance, buy the right equipment for that job instead. We would rather tell you that now than sell you a cage you should not be using.

Why You'll Love the HD Forklift Safety Cage

  • 300kg load capacity: carries an operator plus tools and materials, where lighter folding platforms stop at 250kg.
  • 1260mm x 800mm platform: wider than most single-person cages, so you can turn with a tool bag without clipping the rails.
  • Self-closing gate on a spring retention latch: shuts and latches on its own, removing the commonest cause of a fall from a platform.
  • Full height mesh rear guard: keeps hands and clothing away from the mast and lift chains while the truck is working.
  • Fully welded steel with a high kick plate: nothing to work loose, and dropped tools stay on the platform.
  • Harness anchor point and internal grab rail: a lanyard point and something solid to hold as the platform moves.

Why You Should Consider a GPC Forklift Cage

GPC Industries build for the UK trade rather than the consumer market, and it shows in the detail: a driver's warning plate fitted as standard, a user guide in the box, and fork pockets that can be altered to your truck's dimensions at the point of ordering. Most cages at this level are sold one size fits all. If your forks sit outside the standard 545mm inside clearance, that flexibility is the difference between a cage that fits and one that does not.

What is a forklift cage?

A forklift cage, also called a man cage or forklift man basket, is a guarded platform that slides onto the forks of a truck you already own and turns it into a temporary means of access at height. HSE calls it a non-integrated working platform. The cage carries the person; the truck does the lifting. Unlike a scissor lift or a MEWP it has no controls of its own, so the truck driver stays at the controls throughout.

When can you use a forklift man cage in the UK?

HSE guidance note PM28, Working platforms (non-integrated) on forklift trucks, is the document that governs this. Its position is that forklift trucks are intended for lifting materials rather than people, and that platforms may be used to lift people in exceptional circumstances only.

In practice that means unplanned and emergency work: a repair that cannot wait, non-routine maintenance, an occasional light fitting or roof light. It does not cover scheduled stock-taking or periodic maintenance. If the task is on a rota, PM28 expects purpose-built access equipment instead.

Two points worth knowing. A non-integrated working platform does not fall under the Machinery Directive and should not carry CE marking, so its absence is not a fault. And like any lifting accessory, the cage needs periodic Thorough Examination, with the next date displayed on the platform.

If you are unsure whether your task qualifies, call us on 020 3004 1152 before you order. It is a short conversation and it is better had first.

How does the cage attach to your forklift?

The cage has two fork pockets on the underside, 184mm wide by 83mm deep, with 545mm inside clearance and 921mm overall. The forks slide in and the cage must then be positively secured to the heel of the fork so it cannot slide or tip. Check your truck's fork section and spread against those figures before ordering. If they do not match, GPC can alter the fork pocket specification at the point of order.

Which model should you choose?

All three share the same 1260mm x 800mm platform and 300kg capacity. FLC02Z at 1985mm is the standard cage. FLC03Z is the same height with an overhead protection rail, which is the one to choose where there is any risk of objects above the operator, such as working under racking or a mezzanine edge. FLC04Z at 2100mm gives the extra height.

Mobile versions of each are also available. If you need the cage to move independently around the site, ask us for the mobile specification.

Delivery and lead times

These cages are built to order with a lead time of 15 to 20 working days. If you need access at height sooner than that, call us and we will tell you honestly whether hiring is the better answer for your timescale.

GPC Industries made-to-order: drum stores, Grenadier security cages, hazardous-substance cabinets, sheet and bar racks, smoking and cycle shelters, custom workbenches and bespoke configurations are built per order and typically delivered in 10–20 working days from order acceptance.

Larger units, oversized cages and project work may extend further. Lead time confirmed at order acceptance.

Delivered by UK pallet freight. Note: additional surcharges apply to Scottish Highlands, Islands and remote postcodes. For bulk orders or site-specific configurations, contact us.

Your product is covered by a 12 month Warranty or more if you opted for the extended warranty. Make sure you register your product.
