500mm or 800mm lift?

500mm gets a drum on and off a standard pallet, which covers most handling. Take the 800mm version if you need to load drums into a vehicle, onto a bench, or onto a second tier of racking, and also if you handle plastic drums as well as steel, since that model is rated for both.

Will it handle plastic drums?

The 800mm model is rated for plastic or steel. The 500mm model is specified for steel. Plastic drum rims flex and have a different profile, so check before assuming a rim grip designed for steel will hold one safely. If you handle both, buy the 800mm version.
