The Owner's Insights on the IBC Containment Pallet

An IBC sitting straight on a warehouse floor has nothing underneath it. If the tap gets knocked or the base splits, a thousand litres goes somewhere, usually a drain. This is the pallet that stops that, and it is the cheapest piece of pollution insurance you will buy.

Polyethylene rather than steel, which is the right call for an IBC containment pallet because IBCs typically hold chemicals rather than oils, and chemicals are what corrode steel bunds from the inside.

Fork pockets mean you can move it loaded. That sounds minor until the yard gets rearranged and the alternative is decanting an IBC to shift a pallet.

How much containment does an IBC need?

GOV.UK guidance covers IBCs alongside drums for oil storage in England and Wales, and sets secondary containment for drums at a minimum of one quarter of capacity. Requirements vary with the substance stored and between UK nations, so confirm your own position with the Environment Agency. Indoors or outdoors?

An open containment pallet is right indoors. Outdoors it fills with rainwater, which both uses up the containment capacity and creates contaminated water you must dispose of as waste. If the IBC lives outside, look at a covered or enclosed unit instead and we will point you at one.

Why does the fork pocket matter?

Because yards get rearranged. Without fork pockets, moving a containment pallet means emptying or craning the IBC off it first. With them, the whole assembly lifts and moves in one go, which is the difference between a ten minute job and a half day.
