A two metre by one metre deck rated to a tonne, built to be towed behind a tug or a tractor unit rather than pushed by hand. This is the workhorse for moving material across a site rather than within a building.

The tyre choice is the decision that matters. Pneumatic tyres absorb a rough yard, broken tarmac and door thresholds, and are what you want outdoors. Cushion tyres roll better on smooth concrete, do not puncture and do not need checking, and are the right call for an indoor circuit. Buying the wrong one is the usual mistake.

The sides and ends version costs around a thousand pounds more and stops things sliding off. If you are carrying anything loose, boxed or irregular, pay it. A flat deck with a tonne of loose stock on it is a bad idea at any speed.

Pneumatic or cushion tyres?

Pneumatic for outdoor use, rough yards, broken surfaces and door thresholds. They absorb shock and protect the load. The downside is punctures and pressure checks. Cushion tyres are solid, never puncture, need no maintenance and roll efficiently on smooth concrete, but they transmit every bump. Indoors, cushion. Outdoors, pneumatic. If the trailer does both, pneumatic is the safer compromise.

Do you need the sides and ends?

If anything on the deck is loose, boxed, round or irregular, yes. The flat deck version suits palletised or strapped loads where nothing can move. Sides and ends add roughly a thousand pounds and remove the need to strap every load, which pays back quickly in handling time if the trailer is in constant use.

What will tow it?
