The Owner's Insights on the Industrial Workbench
The worktop choice is the decision that matters, and most people get it wrong. Steel takes heat, solvent and impact but it is noisy, cold and marks components. Plywood is forgiving on parts and quiet to work on but it soaks up oil. MDF gives the flattest, smoothest surface for assembly and inspection work but it will not take a hammering or any water.
Two lengths at 1500 or 1800mm, two depths at 750 or 900mm. The 900mm depth is worth it if anything stands at the back of the bench, because 750mm disappears fast once you put a vice and a parts bin on it.
It is a system rather than a single product. Lower shelves, retaining lips, louvred back panels, cantilever shelves, tool rails with LED lighting and worktop power points all bolt on. Worth planning the whole bench at the point of order rather than adding bits later.
Why You'll Love this Industrial Workbench
- Three worktop materials: MDF, plywood or steel, so the surface suits the work rather than the other way round.
- Two lengths and two depths: 1500 or 1800mm long, 750 or 900mm deep, matched to your space.
- Extensive accessory range: lower shelves, retaining lips, louvred panels, cantilever shelves, tool rails and power points.
- Tool rail with LED light available: task lighting where the work is, not on the ceiling behind you.
- Worktop power point option: power at bench height rather than trailing leads across the floor.
- Cupboards and drawers available: storage built into the bench frame, left or right hand, four colours.
Why You Should Consider a GPC Workbench
GPC sell this as a configurable system rather than a fixed bench, so you specify the worktop and the fittings for the actual job. The louvred back panel and tool rail options turn it from a table into a proper workstation, and they fit the frame rather than being bolted on afterwards.

Which worktop should you choose?
Steel for heat, solvents, welding and heavy impact. It is the most durable and the least pleasant to work on. Plywood for general assembly and anywhere components could be damaged by a hard surface, though it absorbs oil over time. MDF for the flattest and smoothest surface, which suits inspection, electronics and fine assembly, but it will not survive water or heavy knocks. If you do a bit of everything, plywood is the safest compromise.
750mm or 900mm deep?
900mm if anything will sit permanently at the back: a vice, a bench grinder, parts bins, a louvred panel with tools on it. 750mm if the bench is a clear working surface. The extra 150mm costs very little and most people who buy 750mm end up wishing they had not.
Which accessories are worth having?
The lower shelf almost always, because the space under a bench gets used whether you plan for it or not. The tool rail with LED light if the work is detailed, since bench-level lighting beats overhead every time. The worktop power point if you use powered hand tools, because it removes a trailing lead. Louvred back panels if tools need to be visible and to hand. Call 020 3004 1152 and we will spec it with you.
