GPC Mobile Work Bench, Plywood or Steel Top

The Owner's Insights on the Mobile Work Bench

A bench that goes to the job. In a maintenance department or a vehicle workshop that is worth a lot, because the alternative is carrying tools and parts to a fixed bench and back again.

Four configurations: plain, with a cupboard, with a single drawer, or with both. The drawer is for hand tools you want immediately; the cupboard is for the bigger items you do not want on show. If the bench follows one person around, both is usually the right answer.

Worktop is 18mm plywood or 2mm steel. On a mobile bench I would lean towards steel, because a mobile bench gets used for whatever is in front of it rather than one controlled task, and steel forgives more. Plywood is kinder to components if the work is assembly.

Why You'll Love this Mobile Work Bench

• Mobile on castors: the bench goes to the job rather than tools and parts coming to the bench.
• Four configurations: plain, cupboard, single drawer, or drawer and cupboard together.
• 18mm plywood or 2mm steel worktop: specified to the work, forgiving or durable.
• Integrated storage options: tools travel with the bench instead of being fetched.
• Lockable cupboard option: keeps tooling secure when the bench is left in a shared area.

Why You Should Consider a GPC Mobile Bench

GPC offer both worktop materials across all four configurations rather than restricting steel to the top model. The 2mm steel top is a genuine working thickness, not a decorative skin over board.

Mobile Work Bench Specifications

Plywood or steel worktop?

Steel for durability, heat and solvent resistance, which suits a mobile bench used for whatever turns up. Plywood is quieter, warmer and kinder to finished components, which suits assembly work. On a bench that moves around and gets used for mixed tasks, steel is usually the safer choice.

Which configuration?

Plain if tools are carried separately. Single drawer for the hand tools needed constantly. Cupboard for bulkier items and anything that should be out of sight. Drawer and cupboard if the bench is effectively one person's mobile workstation, which is what most maintenance teams end up wanting.

Mobile or fixed bench?

Mobile if the work is spread around a building and the bench follows it. Fixed if the work comes to one place, because a fixed bench is more rigid underfoot, holds a vice better and costs less for the same surface area. Many workshops run one fixed bench and one mobile.
