How much containment do you actually need?

For oil stored in drums in England and Wales, GOV.UK guidance states that secondary containment must hold at least one quarter of the capacity of the drum it holds, or one quarter of the combined capacity where the containment can hold several drums. That is a lower figure than many people assume, because the 110 per cent rule they are thinking of applies to fixed tanks rather than drums.

Different rules may apply to substances other than oil, and Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own regimes. Check your own position with the Environment Agency or your local regulator, and call us on 020 3004 1152 if you want to talk through which unit suits your volumes.

Which configuration do you need?

Polyethylene or steel?

Polyethylene for chemical compatibility, steel for physical durability. If you are storing acids or anything that attacks steel, polyethylene is the only sensible answer. For oils and fuels in a busy yard where forklifts pass close, a steel unit will survive the knocks better and we will tell you so.
