What does the law require for drum containment?

For oil in drums in England and Wales, GOV.UK guidance sets secondary containment at a minimum of one quarter of the drum's capacity, or one quarter of the combined capacity where the containment holds several drums. The widely quoted 110 per cent rule relates to fixed tanks. Other substances and other UK nations may be governed differently, so confirm your own position with the Environment Agency, and ring us on 020 3004 1152 if you want help sizing it.

Should you size up?

If your drum holding is likely to grow, buy the next size now. The cost difference between configurations is small against the cost of replacing a vault you have outgrown, and part-filled containment is not a compliance problem the way under-sized containment is.
