The Owner's Insights on the Premium Electric Tug

The thing that sells these is the licence question. A forklift needs a trained, certificated operator. A pedestrian tug does not, so anyone on your team can move a 1500kg load with half an hour of familiarisation. For sites that keep a forklift busy just shunting cages and trolleys about, a tug frees it up and removes the bottleneck.

It is 592mm long and 535mm wide with a 900mm turning circle, so it goes down aisles and through doorways that no counterbalance truck will manage. Five speed settings means you can crawl it in tight spaces and open it up across a yard.

The battery pack swaps out. If you run two shifts, buy a second pack and the tug never stops to charge. Worth knowing before you order rather than after.

Why You'll Love the Premium Electric Tug

  • 1500kg towing capacity: moves loaded cages, trolleys and trailers that would otherwise need a forklift and a licensed driver.
  • No operator licence required: pedestrian controlled, so any trained team member can use it.
  • 900mm turning circle: turns in a corridor width where a counterbalance truck needs a bay.
  • 592 x 535mm footprint: compact enough for doorways and aisles that rule out other handling equipment.
  • 5 speed switch: crawl speed in tight areas, faster travel across open yard.
  • Interchangeable battery packs: swap rather than charge, so the tug covers multiple shifts without downtime.
  • 340mm pneumatic driving wheels: handles uneven yard surfaces, with other wheel types available to order.

Why You Should Consider a GPC Electric Tug

GPC supply these with safe tillerhead controls and a 7 day lead time, which is quick for powered handling equipment. Other wheel types are available on request rather than being a fixed specification, which matters if your floors are smooth concrete rather than broken yard.

Do you need a licence to use an electric tug?

A pedestrian-controlled tug is not a forklift truck and does not require the same formal operator certification. That said, UK employers still have duties under PUWER to ensure anyone using work equipment is adequately trained and the equipment is suitable and maintained. In practice that means proper familiarisation and a record of it, rather than a certificated course. If you want certainty for your own site, check with your health and safety adviser, and call us on 020 3004 1152 if you want to talk through how others handle it.

Tug or forklift?

A tug tows. A forklift lifts. If most of what your forklift does all day is drag cages and trolleys from one end of the building to the other, a tug does that job without tying up the truck or a licensed driver. If you need to lift to height, you still need the forklift. Plenty of sites run both and find the forklift suddenly has capacity it did not have before.

How many battery packs do you need?

One pack covers a normal single shift. If you run two shifts or the tug is in near-constant use, a second pack means swapping instead of waiting on a charge. Order the spare at the same time: it is cheaper than discovering the gap three weeks in.
