This is the square one. A 990 by 990mm platform suits a single operator working straight ahead, and the gate opens at the front rather than the side, so you step in facing the job. If the work is overhead and directly in front of you, that layout is more natural than a side entry.

Mesh back and half sides rather than full height mesh all round. You get the guarding where the mast and chains are, and an open feel above waist height, which some operators prefer and some do not.

Be clear about the rating: 250kg, against 300kg on the heavy duty cage. One person and tools. The mobile version runs on four swivel castors so you can wheel it to the truck rather than carrying it.

Standard or heavy duty cage?

The standard cage gives you a 990mm square platform at 250kg. The heavy duty version gives 1260 x 800mm at 300kg, a side opening gate and a full height mesh rear guard. Take the heavy duty one if the operator needs to turn with tools, if you are near the weight limit, or if you want full height guarding. Take this one if the work is straight ahead and the square platform suits better.

When can you use a forklift cage in the UK?

HSE guidance note PM28 governs non-integrated working platforms on forklift trucks. Its position is that forklifts are intended for lifting materials rather than people, and that platforms may be used in exceptional circumstances only: unplanned and emergency work, not scheduled stock-taking or planned maintenance.

One thing to check before ordering. The supplier's literature states compliance with PM28 3rd Edition. HSE's current version is the Fourth Edition, published 2013. We are seeking written confirmation from GPC on which edition this cage meets. Static or mobile?

Mobile adds four swivel castors and 50mm of height, so the cage can be wheeled to the truck and parked out of the way after. Static is cheaper and fine if the cage lives beside the forklift. If it gets stored in a different part of the building, pay for the castors.

Delivery

15 to 20 working days. Check your truck's fork section against the 545mm inside clearance before ordering, and ring 020 3004 1152 if it does not match, because the fork pockets can be altered to suit.
