The Owner's Insights on the Fibreglass Combination Ladder

The reason this one is fibreglass and not aluminium is EN 50528. That is the standard for insulating ladders used where there is a risk of contact with live electrical equipment. If your people work anywhere near a panel, a distribution board or overhead services, an aluminium ladder is the wrong tool and this is the right one.

Three configurations from one ladder: stepladder, extension ladder, or freestanding extension. That covers most of what a maintenance team runs into without carrying three ladders in the van.

It is heavier than the aluminium equivalent. Fibreglass always is. That is the trade you make for the insulation, and if you are not working near electrics you may genuinely be better off with aluminium.

Why You'll Love the Fibreglass Combination Ladder

  • Tested to EN 50528: the insulating ladder standard, so it is suitable for work near live electrical equipment.
  • Certified to EN 131 Professional: the workplace duty rating on top of the electrical certification.
  • Three configurations in one ladder: stepladder, extension, or freestanding extension, replacing three separate ladders.
  • 5 year guarantee: longer than most access equipment carries, backed by the manufacturer.
  • Locking mechanism between sections: positive engagement rather than relying on friction.
  • Roller wheels fitted: run the ladder up a wall rather than walking it hand over hand.

Why You Should Consider a Climb-It Ladder

Carrying both EN 131 Professional and EN 50528 means the ladder is tested for workplace duty and for electrical insulation, not one or the other. Plenty of fibreglass ladders are sold on the material alone without the EN 50528 testing behind them, and the material by itself is not the same as a tested product.

Why fibreglass rather than aluminium?

Aluminium conducts electricity. Fibreglass does not, which is why anyone working near live electrical equipment should be on a fibreglass ladder tested to EN 50528. If your work is nowhere near electrics, aluminium is lighter, cheaper and perfectly adequate, and we will tell you so rather than upsell you.

What does EN 50528 cover?

EN 50528 is the European standard for insulating ladders used for work on or near live electrical installations. A ladder meeting it has been tested for its insulating performance, not simply made from a material that happens not to conduct. If electrical safety is the reason you are buying fibreglass, the standard is the thing to check for, not the material.

Which configuration will you use most?

Most buyers use the stepladder setting day to day and the extension occasionally. If you are honestly only ever going to use it as a stepladder, a dedicated fibreglass stepladder is lighter to carry and costs less. The combination earns its keep when the same team meets all three situations in a week.
