The Owner's Insights on the Wall Mounted Smoking Shelter
This is the shelter for sites that do not have the yard space or the budget for a freestanding one. It fixes back to an existing wall, so you are only providing a roof and sides rather than a whole structure, and the cost reflects that.
The practical advantage beyond price is the base. A freestanding shelter needs a prepared concrete pad sized to its full footprint. A wall mounted unit takes most of its load through the building, so the groundwork is considerably less.
The limitation is obvious and worth stating: you need a suitable wall in the right place. If the only available spot is in the middle of a car park, this is not your product and the freestanding shelter is.
Why You'll Love the Wall Mounted Smoking Shelter
- Fixes to an existing wall: no full freestanding structure to buy, so it costs a fraction of a standalone shelter.
- Minimal groundwork: the building carries much of the load, so you avoid a full concrete pad.
- Compact footprint: projects from the wall rather than occupying an island of yard space.
- Designated covered area: gives staff a proper place to go, which is what keeps smoking away from doorways.
Why You Should Consider a GPC Shelter
GPC build both wall mounted and freestanding shelters, so they will tell you honestly which suits your site rather than selling you the bigger one. For many smaller premises the wall mounted version does the same job for a third of the money.

Wall mounted or freestanding?
Wall mounted if you have a suitable external wall where people can reasonably stand, and it will save you a substantial amount on both the unit and the groundwork. Freestanding if the only workable location is away from a building, or if you need the shelter enclosed on more sides. We supply both and will say which fits your site.
What wall do you need?
A sound external wall capable of taking the fixings, in a position where a smoking area is appropriate relative to doors, windows and ventilation intakes. That last point catches people out: a shelter directly outside a fire exit or under an air intake creates a different problem. Call us on 020 3004 1152 with a description of the spot and we will tell you whether it will work.
Smoking shelter compliance
Smoke-free legislation restricts smoking in enclosed and substantially enclosed workplaces, which is why outdoor shelters are designed to remain open on at least one side. How the rules apply to your premises, and where the shelter may sit, is a matter for your local authority environmental health team. Ring us on 020 3004 1152 if you want to talk through what comparable sites have installed.
