Industrial Shelving vs Pallet Racking: Which Do You Need?

Two storage systems dominate most UK warehouses, stockrooms and workshops: industrial shelving and pallet racking. They look similar — uprights, beams, levels — but they are built for different jobs, and prices run from £50 for a DIY boltless bay to £1,285+ for a configured industrial system. Choose the wrong one and you either waste money on capacity you don't need, or build a system that can't safely carry what you put on it. This guide explains the difference, what industrial shelves actually cost, and answers the questions buyers and HSE inspectors ask most often.

What is industrial shelving?

Industrial shelving is a hand-loaded storage system designed for boxes, totes, parts, files and other items a person picks by hand. Loads sit directly on shelves — usually steel, chipboard or wire mesh — and a typical bay carries anywhere from around 150kg to 400kg per shelf depending on the duty rating. It is built for accessibility and frequent manual picking: shelf heights are set so an operator can reach stock without a forklift, and levels can be adjusted as your product mix changes. You'll see the same product sold as warehouse shelving, commercial shelving or industrial storage shelves — the duty rating matters more than the label.

Longspan shelving is the heavier-duty end of the shelving family. It uses wider beams to span bigger, bulkier hand-loaded items — think large cartons, spare parts, or kitted assemblies — often at several hundred kilos per level. It bridges the gap between standard shelving and full pallet racking.

Types of industrial shelving units

One honest distinction the retail listings blur: "industrial-style" shelving is not industrial shelving. The distressed wood-and-steel units sold for the home ("industrial shelving for home", IKEA, B&Q and similar searches) are a furniture aesthetic, typically rated for a few tens of kilos. Industrial-grade shelving is rated in hundreds of kilos per shelf and specified against a stated duty. If you're furnishing a kitchen, buy the former; if you're storing stock, rate the latter. Likewise industrial wall shelving: wall brackets belong to the fixings aisle and depend entirely on your wall — for anything heavy, a freestanding bay on the slab is the safer specification.

What is pallet racking?

Pallet racking — often called industrial racking — is a heavy-duty system built to store palletised loads handled by forklift or reach truck. Beams clip into tall, bolted-down upright frames, and each beam pair (a "level") commonly carries 1,000kg to 3,000kg or more. Because it is loaded mechanically, racking can go far higher than shelving — 6 metres and beyond — making it the standard choice for bulk storage, distribution and any operation moving goods on pallets.

Pallet racking vs shelving: the key difference

The single biggest difference is how goods are handled. Shelving is loaded by hand; racking is loaded by machine. Everything else follows from that:

  • Load weight — shelving carries kilos per shelf; racking carries tonnes per level.
  • Access — shelving is built around a person's reach; racking is built around a forklift's reach and aisle width.
  • Height — shelving stops where a picker can safely reach; racking uses the full height of the building.
  • What it holds — shelving suits loose, boxed and non-palletised goods; racking suits pallets and large unit loads.
  • Flexibility — shelving levels are quick to re-set for changing stock; racking is a more permanent, structural installation.

What does industrial shelving cost?

The market splits into tiers, and the honest answer is that we only sell the top ones:

  • DIY boltless bays — £50–£150 from the sheds. Fine for a garage; not specified for workplace picking loads.

What is the difference between racking and shelving, HSE-wise?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) draws the distinction by duty and handling rather than by appearance. Its guidance document HSG76 (Warehousing and storage: A guide to health and safety) treats heavy, mechanically-handled racking as a structure that must be specified, installed and inspected to carry its rated load, with safe working loads clearly displayed and damage managed. Pallet racking is also covered by the SEMA codes of practice and should receive a documented annual rack inspection by a competent person, with operators trained to report damage immediately.

Shelving is lower-risk because loads are lighter and applied by hand, but it is still work equipment under PUWER 1998: it must be suitable for the load, in good condition, and not overloaded. In short — both must be loaded within their rated limits, but racking carries a heavier compliance and inspection burden because the consequences of failure are greater.

Which should you choose?

Work back from your stock and how you move it:

  • Choose industrial shelving if your goods are hand-picked, boxed or loose, you need frequent access, and individual items are well under half a tonne. It's the right call for stockrooms, parts stores, archives, retail backrooms and order-picking faces.
  • Choose longspan shelving if you hand-load bulky or heavy non-palletised items that ordinary shelving can't span — the medium-duty middle ground.
  • Choose pallet racking if you receive and store goods on pallets, run a forklift or reach truck, and want to use the full height of the building for bulk storage.

Many sites use both: pallet racking for bulk reserve stock and back-up pallets, with warehouse shelving or the lower racking beams set up as a hand-pick face for fast-moving lines. If your stored items are long or awkward — timber, pipe, board, profiles — neither is ideal and cantilever racking is usually the better answer.

Don't forget protection and inspection

Whichever system you install, the bottom of every upright is the most vulnerable point in a forklift environment.
