Longspan shelving sits in a useful gap: stronger and wider than ordinary boltless shelving, but lighter and more flexible than full pallet racking. For hand-loaded stock that is too bulky or heavy for small-parts shelving but does not justify a forklift, it is often the right answer. Longspan shelving, longspan racking, widespan — are they different things?
No. Longspan shelving, longspan racking, long span shelving and widespan shelving all describe the same class of product, and UK suppliers use the terms interchangeably. Roughly, suppliers who came from the shelving trade call it shelving, and suppliers who came from the racking trade call it racking. There is no technical distinction and no standard that separates them, so do not pay a premium for one label over the other — compare the shelf load rating, the bay size and the deck material instead.
The one thing worth knowing is that some vendors use "longspan racking" for taller, heavier bays intended to be loaded by a forklift at the top level. What is longspan shelving?
Longspan shelving is a heavy duty boltless shelving system built on upright frames and long horizontal beams, with shelf panels spanning between them. The "longspan" name refers to the wide beam span — typically 900 mm to 1,800 mm between uprights — which gives generous, uninterrupted shelf widths without a leg in the middle. Shelves are usually chipboard, steel or mesh, and the system assembles without bolts, so it is quick to build and easy to reconfigure as your stock changes.
It is designed for hand loading: stock is placed and picked manually rather than by forklift, which makes it suited to stockrooms, workshops, archives, retail back-of-house and parts stores.
How much does longspan shelving cost?
"Longspan shelving price" is the most searched follow-up question on this product and almost nothing in the search results answers it, because bay prices vary with height, depth, span, number of levels and deck material. As a planning guide for UK trade buyers in 2026:
- £90–£160 per bay — light single bays, around 1,800 mm high, 900 mm wide, chipboard decks, entry-level import steel. Fine for a domestic garage or a small stockroom; not a system you would extend across a warehouse.
- £160–£300 per bay — the mainstream trade band. 1,800–2,000 mm high, 1,200–1,800 mm span, four or five chipboard levels, roughly 200–350 kg UDL per level. This is where most of the results you will find online sit, and for most stockrooms it is genuinely the right buy.
- £300–£600 per bay — taller bays (2,500 mm plus), deeper frames, galvanised or steel decks, higher UDLs, and mesh decking for sprinkler compliance.
- £600 and up per bay, or priced on application — engineered industrial systems designed as a scheme rather than sold as bays, with a drawing, a load calculation and installation. This is the tier we supply.
Two cost traps worth knowing. First, extension bays are much cheaper than starter bays because they share an upright with the neighbouring bay — planning a run of six bays as one starter plus five extensions rather than six starters typically saves 15–25% on the frame cost. Second, the deck usually costs more than the frame on a wide bay, so upgrading from chipboard to steel across a whole run costs more than people expect. Price the run, not the bay.
Longspan shelving vs pallet racking vs standard shelving
Standard boltless shelving handles light, small items — typically tens of kilograms per shelf — on narrow bays. Longspan shelving steps up to medium and heavy hand-loaded goods, with wider bays and higher per-shelf capacities, commonly a few hundred kilograms. Pallet racking is a different class again: engineered for palletised loads handled by forklift and rated in tonnes per beam level.

The specifications that matter
Shelf load capacity (UDL)
The key figure is the uniformly distributed load each shelf level will safely carry. Manufacturers quote it per shelf and sometimes per bay. Always size to the heaviest shelf you will actually load — and remember the rating assumes weight spread evenly across the deck, not concentrated in one spot. A 300 kg shelf will not take a 300 kg engine block on one corner.
Watch for the trade-off that catches people out: wider spans carry less. The same upright and beam pair that gives 350 kg over a 1,200 mm span may only give 200 kg over 1,800 mm. If a quote lists one UDL for the whole range, ask which span it applies to.
Shelf deck material
The deck is the decision that changes how the bay behaves, and it is the axis most suppliers configure on:
- Chipboard — the standard and cheapest deck. Good for boxed and general dry goods. It swells if it gets wet and it does not like point loads or dragged metal.
- Steel deck — resists impact, does not swell, and takes point loads better. The right choice for parts, castings and anything with sharp corners.

- Wire mesh — lets light and water through, which matters under sprinklers, and stops dust and small parts collecting on the deck. Often specified by a fire risk assessment rather than chosen.
Bay dimensions — height, width and depth
Uprights set the height and depth; beams set the width, which is the span. Common UK heights are 1,800 mm, 2,000 mm and 2,500 mm; depths run 450–900 mm and occasionally to 1,200 mm for bulky goods. Taller bays store more but limit safe hand-reach, so match the top shelf to what staff can load without steps — and if you do need to reach higher levels, buy proper steps or access platforms rather than letting people climb the frame.
Starter and extension bays
Longspan shelving bays come in two forms: starter bays (two uprights and a full set of beams) and extension bays (one upright, sharing the neighbour's frame). Running bays as extensions along a wall saves on uprights and cost — plan the whole run before you order, because retro-fitting a run from a set of separately bought starter bays wastes an upright at every join.
Should you buy used longspan racking?
Second-hand longspan comes up constantly in searches, and there is a real market in it. It can be a sensible buy — the steel does not wear out in normal use — but only with three checks in place.
First, make sure the components match. Longspan beams and uprights are not interchangeable between manufacturers, and a mixed lot may not lock together safely even if it appears to fit. Second, get the original load ratings. Without the manufacturer's data you have a shelf with no stated capacity, which is a problem under PUWER and for your own risk assessment. Third, inspect every upright for impact damage — a bent or dented leg has lost a meaningful share of its capacity and cannot be straightened back into service.
For a small stockroom bought and used sensibly, second-hand is often good value. For anything load-critical, inspected, or that has to be extended in two years' time, new components with traceable ratings are the safer buy. We sell new equipment only — we do not deal in used or ex-demo racking.
Loading and safe use
Longspan shelving must be installed level and, where required, fixed or braced to stay stable when loaded. Load the heaviest items on the lower shelves to keep the centre of gravity low, never exceed the stated shelf UDL, and do not climb the shelving.
