Tool Trolleys: How to Choose Mobile Tool Storage for the Workshop

A tool trolley solves a specific problem: the tools live in one place and the work happens somewhere else. Every trip back to the cabinet is a few minutes lost, and on a maintenance job those trips add up faster than anyone admits. The right trolley puts the tools at the job — but "tool trolley" covers three quite different products, and buying the wrong one is the usual reason a trolley ends up parked in a corner as a shelf.

The three types of tool trolley

1. Panel trolleys — tools visible and hung

A panel trolley is a wheeled frame carrying perforated or louvre panels on both faces. Hooks clip into the perforations for hand tools; plastic bins clip onto the louvre panels for fixings and consumables. Nothing is hidden, so a missing tool is obvious at a glance — the same logic that makes shadow boards work, on castors.

Panels mount vertically or on an incline, and hooks reposition without tools using the Perfolock fixing.

Best for: hand-tool-heavy work, shared tool points, anywhere tool control matters. Weak at: anything that needs to be locked away, and anything oily or awkward that does not want to hang.

2. Drawer trolleys — tools secured and sorted

A drawer trolley is a mobile cabinet: a welded steel housing on castors, full of drawers, with a lock. It is the format most people picture when they say "tool trolley", and it wins wherever tools need to be secure, sorted by job, and protected from dust and damp.

The Bott Verso 5 Drawer Mobile Cabinet is a representative spec: five full-extension drawers (2 × 100 mm and 3 × 175 mm), each rated to 50 kg UDL, with central locking and drawer blocking so only one drawer opens at a time. It runs on 125 mm castors with two braked swivel wheels and a push–pull handle, and is available at 800 × 550 × 965 mm with a three-sided top tray or 800 × 600 × 980 mm with a 30 mm lino or multiplex worktop.

Best for: personal or team tool kits, security, fine tools and instruments. Weak at: speed of retrieval — you have to remember which drawer.

3. Maintenance trolleys — drawers plus cupboard

The hybrid. A maintenance trolley splits the body between a drawer stack and a lockable cupboard, so hand tools live in the drawers and the bulky items — cordless kit in cases, cans, spares, PPE — go in the cupboard rather than being left on top.

The Bott Verso Maintenance Trolley uses a fully welded steel housing with a central partition dividing five drawers from a cupboard section. Drawers run on 100% extension ball-bearing slides with drawer blocking and central locking at 50 kg UDL each; the cupboard has a stiffened lockable door opening to 180° and an adjustable galvanised shelf rated to 75 kg UDL. Total load capacity is 200 kg, it sits on 125 mm heavy-duty castors with brakes on two wheels, and top options are industrial lino, multiplex hardwood, or a top tray with anti-slip mat.

Best for: mobile maintenance and service teams working away from a fixed bench. Weak at: nothing much, which is why it costs more than either single-format trolley.

Six things to check before you buy

Load rating — per drawer and total

Two numbers matter and they are not interchangeable. Per-drawer UDL (uniformly distributed load — 50 kg on the Verso units) tells you what one drawer will take without the slides binding. Total capacity (200 kg on the maintenance trolley) is what the frame and castors will carry. A trolley loaded with sockets and impact kit reaches its total figure faster than people expect, and an overloaded trolley on a sloped floor is genuinely hard to stop.

Castors and floor surface

125 mm castors are the practical minimum for a laden tool trolley on an industrial floor — smaller wheels catch on expansion joints, cable runs and door thresholds. Look for at least two braked wheels, and check that the brakes are reachable with a boot rather than requiring a crouch. Wheel material matters as much as diameter: soft-tread wheels roll quieter and cope with debris, hard wheels roll easier on smooth floors but transmit every crack. Locking and drawer blocking

Central locking secures the whole stack from one point. Drawer blocking is the separate feature worth insisting on: it prevents more than one drawer being open at once, which stops a loaded trolley tipping forward when someone pulls out the bottom drawer while the top one is already open. On a mobile unit this is a safety feature, not a convenience.

The top surface

Almost every tool trolley becomes a temporary bench, so choose the top deliberately. A three-sided top tray stops parts rolling off in transit. Lino gives a durable, non-slip, easy-wipe surface that suits assembly and electrical work. Multiplex hardwood takes heavier, rougher handling. Footprint and route

Measure the narrowest point on the route, not the widest part of the workshop. A 1000 mm panel trolley is superb next to a machine and useless if it will not pass a 900 mm doorway or fit in a lift. Height matters too: a 1600 mm panel trolley blocks sightlines in a busy aisle in a way an 980 mm drawer trolley does not.

Whether it can grow

Modular systems earn their price over years. Panels, hooks and bins on the Bott Perfo system reposition and add without tools; drawer and cupboard modules in the Verso and Cubio ranges share fittings with the fixed benches and cabinets, so a workshop can standardise on one accessory set rather than three.

Keeping a trolley safe in service

A tool trolley is work equipment, so the general PUWER duties apply: it should be suitable for the job, maintained in efficient working order, and inspected where safety depends on its condition. In practice that means a short routine — check the castors and brakes hold on the floor you actually use, keep the heaviest drawers at the bottom, apply the brakes before opening a drawer, and never move a trolley with a drawer open. Damaged castors are the single most common fault and the cheapest to fix. This is a summary of general duties, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a tool trolley and a tool cabinet?

A tool cabinet is designed to stay put and is usually specified for capacity — a Bott Cubio cupboard can be rated to 1.5 tonnes. A tool trolley is designed to move, so total capacity is lower (typically a couple of hundred kilograms) and the castors, brakes and handle become part of the specification. If tools never leave one bay, a fixed tool cabinet gives more storage for the money.

How much weight can a tool trolley hold?

Check the two published figures. Drawers on the Bott Verso units are rated to 50 kg UDL each and the maintenance trolley has a 200 kg total capacity. Manufacturers rate uniformly distributed loads — a concentrated point load in one corner of a drawer will not behave the same way as the rated figure suggests.

Do I need drawer blocking on a mobile unit?

It is strongly worth having. Without it, two loaded open drawers move the centre of gravity forward far enough that a trolley on castors can tip. Drawer blocking removes that failure mode entirely and costs nothing in daily use.

Are panel trolleys better than drawer trolleys?

Neither is better; they answer different questions. Panels win on speed and visual tool control — you can see at a glance what is missing. Drawers win on security, dust protection and storing anything that will not hang. Workshops running both usually put panels at the shared tool point and drawers with the individual technicians.

What size castors should a tool trolley have?

125 mm is the practical minimum on industrial floors, with brakes on at least two wheels. Smaller castors are fine on smooth, clean, level floors and become a nuisance anywhere else.
