Self-Closing Skips

A self-closing skip does one thing an ordinary tipping skip cannot: it discharges and then re-seals itself, without anyone leaving the forklift. The operator lifts the skip, positions it over the bay or hopper, pulls the release chain from inside the cab, and the spring-loaded bottom drops open and then closes again on its own. Nobody walks into the discharge area, and nobody handles the skip while it is loaded and elevated.

That is the whole argument for the format. If your waste stream involves repeated trips to the same bay, or discharge into a container the driver cannot see over, the self-closing skip removes the part of the job where people and loads meet.

How the self-closing mechanism works

The GPC Self Closing Heavy Duty Skips are built from fully welded steel with a spring closing bottom on a full length hinge. Discharge is triggered by a release catch chain which can be pulled from inside the forklift — the load drops through the base, and the spring returns the bottom to the closed position ready for the next fill.

Because the base opens downwards rather than the body tipping forwards, the skip does not need clearance in front of it and the load lands where the skip is, not where the skip throws it. That matters when discharging into a narrow bay, a baler or a lower container.

Note the footprints are not simply scaled versions of each other. The 1.6 m³ unit is nearly square at 1380 × 1340 mm; the 2.4 m³ unit is longer and narrower at 2000 × 1200 mm. If the skip has to live in a marked-out floor space or pass through a set opening, check the plan dimensions rather than assuming the bigger capacity is bigger in every direction.

Stacking is part of the specification

These skips can be stacked 4 high, which is the detail that decides how many you can justify buying. A site running three or four skips on rotation — one filling, one waiting, one at the bay — needs somewhere to keep the empties. Stackable units store in a single footprint instead of four.

Stack empties only, on level ground, and treat the stack as you would any other stored load: nothing on top of it, and clear of traffic routes.

Choosing between self-closing and tilting

A tilting skip is cheaper and perfectly adequate where the operator has clear sight of the discharge point and space in front of the forks. Choose self-closing instead when discharge happens repeatedly, out of sight, into a confined bay, or where you want the skip closed again immediately rather than relying on the operator to right it.

Before you order

  • Check your forklift's capacity at the load centre, not its headline rating. A 2.4 m³ skip weighs 212 kg empty and the contents may be dense — swarf and offcuts fill a skip to weight long before they fill it to volume.   • Confirm the discharge height you need to clear, and that the mast will reach it with the skip fully loaded.
  • Plan the empty-skip storage — the 4-high stack only helps if there is a bay for it.
