Swarf is not ordinary workshop waste. It comes off the machine wet, it is heavy for its volume, it is sharp, and the cutting fluid it carries is a contaminant you are responsible for once it leaves the machine. A general-purpose waste bin collects all four problems and gives you nowhere to put the fluid.
A mobile swarf skip is built for that specific job: collect chips at the machine, let the fluid drain and separate, wheel the unit to the collection point, and tip it under control.
The internal drain is the reason to buy one
The GPC mobile swarf skip, model SK202Y, has an internal drain. That single feature is what separates a swarf skip from a steel box on wheels.
Without it, cutting fluid pools in the bottom of the container under the weight of the chips above it. The load gets heavier, the fluid sloshes when the skip is moved, and it comes out in a rush at the moment of tipping — usually onto the floor next to the collection point. With a drain, the fluid separates as the skip fills, so what you tip is chips rather than chips and a reservoir.

That wheel arrangement is worth reading properly. Two fixed larger wheels at one end and two smaller swivel castors at the other is the configuration that tracks straight down a long run and still steers at the end of it — the right compromise for a skip that travels the length of a machine shop and then has to be positioned accurately at a collection point. Four swivel castors would wander under a heavy load; four fixed wheels would not turn at all.
Sizing a swarf skip by weight, not volume
The commonest specifying mistake with swarf is choosing on capacity. Steel turnings are dense, and a skip filled to the brim with wet swarf can be genuinely difficult to move by hand long before it looks full. Work out roughly what a shift produces, and if the honest answer is that a full unit would be a two-person push, buy the smaller skip and empty it more often — or move the material with equipment rather than muscle.

Where the swarf goes next
A mobile swarf skip is a collection unit, not a disposal one. It empties into something larger — usually a forklift-handled skip in a yard or bay. If that step is not planned, the swarf skips end up standing full because there is nowhere to tip them.
