The Owner's Insights on the ION-CORE-90 Battery Cabinet
The number that sells this cabinet is 780mm. That is a standard worktop height, so it goes under the bench where your batteries already live rather than taking a new footprint in a workshop that has not got one spare. At 593mm wide it fits a single bench bay.
What you are buying is 90 minutes of fire resistance in both directions. Outside to inside, tested to EN 14470-1, so a fire in the building does not reach the batteries. Inside to outside, tested to EN 1363-1, so a battery going into thermal runaway does not take the building with it. That second direction is the one that matters with lithium-ion and it is the one cheaper steel cupboards do not give you.
Two honest points before you order. It is 154 kg, and the transport base takes pallet truck forks at 526mm wide and 90mm high, so plan how it gets to its final position. And the internal space is 470 x 452 x 582mm across two drawers, which is a sensible amount of power tool batteries or a handful of e-bike packs, not a warehouse's worth. If you are storing in volume you want a full height cabinet instead.
Why You'll Love the ION-CORE-90 Battery Cabinet
- 90 minutes fire resistance, both directions: type 90 to EN 14470-1 from outside in, and EN 1363-1 from inside out, so a battery fire stays in the cabinet.
- 780mm high: slides under a standard worktop instead of claiming new floor space.
- Eight 230V UK sockets inside the fire-rated body: two four-way strips, so cables stay inside the cabinet rather than trailing out of it.
- Smoke detectors with LED indicator and visual and acoustic alarms: tells you about an incipient fire without anyone opening the drawer to look.
- Potential-free switching contact as standard: forwards an alarm to your building management system or a manned control centre when the area is empty.
- Integrated transport base: the whole cabinet can be lifted out and moved outdoors if a pack does start to fail.
Why You Should Consider an asecos Safety Cabinet
asecos build fire-rated hazardous storage and little else, and the ION-LINE is their lithium-ion range specifically. The practical reason to choose them is documentation: type-tested to EN 14470-1 with a CE declaration of conformity you can hand to an insurer or an auditor, and an extended manufacturer warranty of up to 10 years if you take one of their service tariffs.

Can you charge batteries inside it?
Yes. That is what the eight sockets are for, and asecos' user manual for the ION-LINE CORE range puts it plainly: these cabinets are designed exclusively to store and charge lithium-ion batteries. The manual calls charging in the cabinet active storage, and describes batteries being charged, or held at a partial 60 to 70 per cent charge, using a charger inside the cabinet.
One wrinkle worth knowing, because you may notice it yourself. The data sheet for this particular order number is headed "safe and passive storing of lithium-ion batteries". Read against the manual, that describes how this configuration is expected to be used rather than a ban on charging, and the two four-way socket strips inside the fire-rated body would make no sense otherwise. If you need the approved use confirmed in writing for an audit or an insurer, ring us on 020 3004 1152 and we will get it from asecos.
Two limits from the manual apply whichever way you use it. Lithium-ion batteries only, because storing them alongside other hazardous substances is not permitted, and no single battery heavier than 15 kg. For flammable liquids you want a COSHH cabinet instead.
What does type 90 actually mean?
Type 90 is a classification under EN 14470-1, and 90 is the highest fire-resistance class in it. The number is the time in minutes before the temperature inside the cabinet rises by more than 180 K with a fire burning outside it. In practical terms that is the window for people to get clear and for the fire service to arrive while the contents stay below ignition temperature.
EN 1363-1 is the separate test for the other direction, inside to outside. A cabinet can hold an external fire out without being tested to contain an internal one, so for lithium-ion both figures matter. This cabinet is rated at 90 minutes for each.
You will see cabinets like this sold as fireproof. Nothing is fireproof, which is exactly why the standard measures resistance in minutes instead of giving a yes or no. What you are buying here is 90 tested minutes in each direction, which is a measured figure rather than an adjective.
What is not included
Worth saying plainly, because the main photograph shows it: the castors in the product image are an optional extra and are not supplied with this cabinet. As standard it sits on its integrated transport base. The castor set for the plinth is a separate part, as is the module for remote signalling if you want the alarm relayed somewhere specific. Ring us and we will quote either alongside the cabinet.
Documents
- asecos product data sheet, order no. 42890-247-39489
- User manual for ION-LINE CORE
- CE declaration of conformity, ION-LINE CORE
- Technical drawing, three-view
We hold all four and will send them over on request, or with the cabinet. Ask when you order.
Delivery and siting
At 154 kg this is a two-person lift at best and realistically a pallet truck job. The transport base is built for that, with a 526mm fork entry width and 90mm entry height. Measure your route and your bench aperture against the 593 x 574 x 780mm body before ordering, and check there is a socket within reach, because the cabinet needs a 230 V supply for the monitoring and the internal outlets.
Need more capacity? The full height ION-CORE-90 takes four insulated shelves and sixteen sockets. Otherwise see our lithium battery storage range, the wider hazardous storage collection, or COSHH cabinets if it is flammable liquids you need to put away rather than batteries.
