The Owner's Insights on the ION-CORE-90 Charging Cabinet

This is the full height version, and the thing that makes it worth the money over a cupboard is the shelves. All four are insulated and propagation tested, which means asecos have set fire to a battery on one level and shown it does not light the batteries on the level below. On a cabinet holding sixteen charging packs that is the failure mode you are actually buying against.

Sixteen UK sockets across two strips, four to a shelf. asecos' user manual is explicit that these cabinets are designed to store and charge, and that charging in the cabinet is what they call active storage. So this is a charging cabinet, not a cupboard you put batteries in overnight.

Now the part most listings skip. asecos' manual states that integrated technical ventilation is required, and the cabinet has a 75 DN extraction air connection on it for exactly that reason. Budget for ducting and an extract fan, or get your M and E contractor to look at it before you order. It is also 352 kg and needs 1,128mm of clear depth to open the doors. This is a planned installation, not something you wheel into a corner.

Why You Should Consider an asecos Safety Cabinet

asecos build fire-rated hazardous storage and little else, and ION-LINE is their lithium-ion range. The reason to pay for one is the paperwork that comes with it: type-tested to EN 14470-1, a CE declaration of conformity, a proper user manual with stated load limits, and an extended manufacturer warranty of up to 10 years if you take one of their service tariffs.

You will need ventilation, and that is not optional

This is the single thing to sort out before you order. asecos' user manual for the ION-LINE CORE states that integrated technical ventilation is required, and the cabinet carries a 75 DN extraction air connection so it can be ducted. The design figure is 5 Pa differential pressure at ten air changes an hour.

In practice that means a duct run to outside and a fan, which is an electrical and ductwork job rather than something that comes in the box. If your building already extracts a COSHH store or a battery room, you may be able to tie into it. If not, price the ventilation alongside the cabinet rather than after it. What can you actually put in it?

Lithium-ion batteries and nothing else. asecos' manual is blunt about this: the cabinets are designed exclusively to store and charge lithium-ion batteries, and storing them alongside other hazardous substances is not permitted. If you want flammable liquids in the same room, that is a separate COSHH cabinet.

Two numbers govern how you load it. No single battery heavier than 15 kg, and no more than 25 kg per shelf evenly spread, so 100 kg across the four levels. That is generous for power tool packs and reasonable for e-bike batteries, and it is the figure to check if you are storing larger industrial packs.

Charging or storage only?

Charging. asecos' user manual states these cabinets are designed to store and charge lithium-ion batteries, and defines active storage as batteries being charged, or held at a partial 60 to 70 per cent charge, in the cabinet using a charger. The sixteen sockets are there to be used.

That is worth saying clearly because the shorter under-bench model in this range is described by asecos as passive storage, which causes confusion across the whole ION-LINE. If you are choosing between them, this is the one to buy for charging duty.

How does it compare with the under-bench model?

The under-bench ION-CORE-90 is 780mm high with two drawers, eight sockets and no ventilation connection, and it slides under a worktop. This one is 1,953mm, has four insulated shelves, sixteen sockets, a collecting sump and a ducted extraction connection.

Take the under-bench cabinet if you have a handful of packs and no appetite for ductwork. Take this one if you are charging a fleet, want propagation tested shelves between levels, and can run an extract. The under-bench unit is roughly a third of the weight and considerably less to install, so do not buy this one by default.

Delivery and siting

352 kg on a transport base with a 526mm fork entry width and 90mm entry height, so it arrives ready for a pallet truck. Check your route, your lift and your floor loading. Allow 1,128mm of clear depth in front for the doors at their 89.4 degree opening, and make sure the extraction route and a 230/400 V supply are both reachable from where it is going to stand.
