The Owner's Insights on the ION-PRO-90 Charging Cabinet
This is the top of the ION-LINE, and the reason to pay for it over the CORE cabinets is one certificate. The PRO is tested to VDMA 24994, which is a real fire test for thermal runaway rather than a furnace test with the fire outside. Someone put a battery into runaway inside this cabinet and measured what happened. If you are the person signing off a charging room, that is the piece of paper worth having.
The practical difference is scale. Six insulated shelves at 75 kg each, six socket strips, forty-eight UK outlets. That is a charging bank for a whole site rather than a department. Both doors open together with one hand, and they close themselves, which matters when someone is carrying two battery packs.
Be clear about what it takes to install. It is 578 kg, 1,193mm wide, and needs 1,209mm of clear depth for the doors. The transport base takes forks at 1,120mm centres. You want a proper floor, a planned route and a 230/400 V supply, and asecos specify that the technical ventilation must run permanently. This is a capital installation, not a cupboard.
Why You'll Love the ION-PRO-90 Charging Cabinet
- VDMA 24994 certified by real fire test: proven against an actual thermal runaway inside the cabinet, not just an external fire.
- Forty-eight UK sockets across six strips: eight outlets per shelf, so a full shelf charges without daisy-chaining anything.
- 75 kg per shelf, six shelves: takes heavy industrial packs, where the CORE cabinets stop at 25 kg a shelf.
- Smoke detectors and a temperature sensor: two detection methods rather than one, with LED display and visual and audible alarms.
- Automatic door closing with 3-point locking: the doors shut themselves and the locking was tested closed in a real fire.
- Chargers cut out on fire or overheating: asecos state that chargers inside the cabinet are switched off if either is detected.
Why You Should Consider an asecos Safety Cabinet
asecos build fire-rated hazardous storage and little else. On the PRO you get the full documentation set: type-tested to EN 14470-1, a separate VDMA 24994 certificate, a CE declaration of conformity, a proper user manual with stated load limits, and an extended manufacturer warranty of up to 10 years if you take one of their service tariffs.

What VDMA 24994 actually tells you
EN 14470-1 and EN 1363-1 both measure a cabinet against a fire. The first puts the fire outside and asks how long the inside stays cool. The second puts it inside and asks how long the outside stays safe. Useful, but neither is a battery test.
VDMA 24994 is. It is a real fire test for the specific failure mode of a lithium-ion cell going into thermal runaway inside the cabinet, which is a different event from a pool fire: faster, hotter in a smaller area, and prone to spreading cell to cell. The PRO carries that certificate and we can send it to you. The CORE cabinets in this range do not, which is the honest reason the PRO costs more.
Ventilation and what you need to provide
The PRO is different from the CORE cabinets here, and in your favour. It comes with a ventilation attachment fitted, which asecos describe as preventing heat build-up while batteries charge, and there is a 100 DN extraction air connection on it.
Two instructions from asecos' manual matter. The technical ventilation must be kept permanently in operation, so it is not something you switch off at night. And because batteries can produce toxic gases, connection to an exhaust air system is recommended. Note that word: recommended for the PRO, where the CORE manual says technical ventilation is required. Ring us on 020 3004 1152 and we will talk through what your building needs before you commit.
What can you put in it, and what you cannot
Lithium-ion batteries only. asecos' manual names four things specifically not to store in it: acids, bases, magnesium, and other metals in powder form. If you need those stored, that is a different cabinet.
Loading is governed by two figures. 75 kg per shelf evenly distributed, which is 450 kg across all six, and no single battery heavier than 15 kg. The 75 kg shelf rating is three times the CORE cabinets and is the number to check if you are charging larger industrial or traction packs.
Which ION-LINE cabinet do you need?
Three steps up, and most people do not need the top one.
The under-bench ION-CORE-90 is 780mm high, eight sockets, two drawers, 154 kg. For a handful of tool packs under a bench.
The full height ION-CORE-90 is 1,953mm, four insulated shelves at 25 kg, sixteen sockets, 352 kg. For a department.
This PRO is 2,114mm, six shelves at 75 kg, forty-eight sockets, 578 kg, and the VDMA 24994 certificate. Buy it if you are charging at site scale, carrying heavy packs, or need the thermal runaway test documented for an insurer or a fire risk assessment. If none of those is true, one of the CORE cabinets will serve you for considerably less.
Options worth asking about
The PRO takes a fire suppression unit with hoop guard, which the CORE range does not. There is also a relay module 4.0 that forwards up to four separate alarm levels rather than a single contact, a remote signalling module, and a 3 metre 400 V power cord. Ring us and we will quote any of them with the cabinet.

Delivery and siting
578 kg on a transport base with a 1,120mm fork entry width and 90mm entry height. Check your floor loading, your route and your lift before ordering. Allow 1,209mm of clear depth at the front for the doors at 89.5 degrees, confirm the overall height of 2,114mm clears your doorway, and have the 230/400 V supply and the extraction route reachable from where it will stand.
