Boltless shelving does exactly what the name says: the bays go together without a single nut, bolt or spanner. Shelves and beams lock into pre-punched uprights using lugs or rivets, which makes boltless shelving units fast to assemble, easy to adjust and simple to reconfigure as your storage changes. This guide explains how boltless systems work, what the load ratings on the box actually mean, what the different tiers cost, and what to check before you buy.
What does boltless shelving mean?
It means the joints carry load through interlocking metal, not through fixings. There is no bolt in shear anywhere in the bay. You will see the same construction sold under half a dozen names, and they all describe the same idea:
- Boltless shelving — the standard UK term.
- Rivet shelving and rivet racking — named after the fixed rivets on the beam ends that tap into keyhole slots on the posts.
- Boltless racking — usually the same product, described as racking because it is being sold for a garage or store rather than an office.
- Bolt-free, tool-free or quick assembly shelving — marketing names for the same construction.
- "Shelves without brackets" or "screwless shelves" — how people search for it when they do not know the trade term. In both cases the shelf is carried by the upright itself, not by a bracket screwed to a wall.
The one distinction worth holding on to: boltless describes the construction method. It says nothing about size or strength. A £25 five-tier unit and a warehouse installation carrying half a tonne per shelf can both be boltless.
How boltless shelving works
Instead of bolted joints, boltless systems rely on interlocking connections:
- Lug systems. Shelves or brackets carry formed lugs that drop into pre-punched slots in the uprights. Load pushes the connection downwards, so the joint tightens under weight. - Rivet systems. Common on lighter garage-style units: beams with fixed rivets tap into keyhole slots on angle-profile posts, usually with a chipboard or MDF deck dropped on top.
Either way the principle is the same: gravity and geometry hold the bay together, and a shelf can be repositioned in minutes by unhooking it and re-seating it at a different slot height.
Reading the load rating — what "175 kg" on the box really means
This is the single most common mis-buy in boltless steel shelving, because the headline number is usually not what people assume it is.
- The big number is normally per shelf, not per bay. A "175 kg boltless shelving unit" means each shelf level takes 175 kg. A five-tier unit is therefore rated around 875 kg total — which is why you also see the same unit advertised with a bay figure in the high hundreds or, on trade units, four figures.
- It is a UDL — uniformly distributed load. The rating assumes the weight is spread evenly across the shelf. Put the whole 175 kg on one corner and you are nowhere near the rated condition.
- The deck matters as much as the beam. A chipboard or MDF deck will bow long before the steel does. Where a system offers a steel deck option, it is the upgrade that changes the real-world capacity.
- Bay ratings assume a level floor and a square build. Out-of-square bays load the joints in ways the rating never contemplated.

Why choose boltless?
- Fast assembly. A bay typically goes up with a rubber mallet and no tools, in a fraction of the time a bolted unit takes.
- Easy adjustment. Shelf pitches change without dismantling the bay — useful when stock profiles change season to season.
- Reconfigurable. Runs can be extended with add-on bays that share uprights, and whole systems can be taken down and re-erected when you move.
- No loose fixings. Nothing to work loose over time, and nothing to lose during a re-layout.
Is boltless shelving strong enough?
Boltless does not mean lightweight. Because the joints tighten under load, well-engineered boltless systems carry serious weight — the R3000 is a heavy-duty industrial system engineered for warehouses, workshops and production floors, available in galvanised or painted steel and configurable up to multi-tier installations. What determines capacity is the shelf UDL and bay rating of the specific system, not the presence or absence of bolts.

What boltless shelving costs in the UK
Four honest tiers, including the ones we do not sell:
- £18–£70 — retail five-tier units. Angle-post rivet construction with chipboard or MDF decks, typically 150–300 kg per shelf, sold by the big DIY and motor factors. For a domestic garage, a shed or a home store, this is the right buy and we will say so plainly — we do not sell at this tier and cannot beat it on price.
- £80–£400 — trade boltless bays. Heavier gauge posts, steel or wire-mesh deck options, proper add-on bay ranges. The sensible tier for a stockroom, a small workshop or a van-fit-out store.
- £1,285.02–£2,359.68 — GPC small parts shelf units (ASU). Fourteen configurations, engineered for picking rather than dead storage. This is the tier where shelving stops being a storage rack and starts being part of a process.
- POA — SSI Schaefer R3000. Specified per project, galvanised or painted, made to order with a typical lead time of around 30–45 days.
The gap between £70 and £1,285 is real, and it is a gap in purpose, not just in quality. If you need four bays in a garage, the retail tier serves you better than anything we sell. Assembling boltless shelving properly
- Check the floor. Level, sound and able to take the loaded bay weight.
- Build the first bay square. Assemble uprights and the bottom shelf first, check square and plumb, then add remaining shelves.
- Seat every lug fully. Each connection should be driven fully home (a soft mallet helps) — a half-seated lug carries load on the wrong part of the joint. If a beam still moves by hand, it is not seated.
- Fit the diagonal or rear bracing if the system has it. On tall bays this is not optional; it is what stops the frame racking sideways.
- Add bays in sequence. Extension bays share the previous bay's upright; keep the run straight as you go.
- Load bottom-up. Heaviest items low, loads spread across each shelf, ratings respected.
Two things people do that they should not: standing on a shelf to reach the top level — the deck is rated for distributed load, not for a person on one foot — and leaving a tall bay unfixed. Tall, narrow or heavily loaded runs should be fixed to the wall or floor in line with the manufacturer's guidance, and under PUWER 1998 the installed system must be kept in safe condition. Inspect for damage and take struck components out of service. Nothing here replaces your own risk assessment.
Boltless shelving parts, corner units and second-hand bays
Three things people search for that are worth an honest answer:
- Boltless shelving parts. Retail units are proprietary — the slot pitch, post profile and beam-end rivet pattern differ between makes, so a beam from one brand will not fit another's posts. Very few retail brands sell individual replacement beams or decks. In practice, if you have lost or bent a component on a cheap unit, the economic answer is another whole bay. Engineered systems are the opposite: they are built to be extended and re-configured, and components are specified from the same catalogue years later.
- Corner units. Boltless corner units let a run turn 90° and use the dead corner of a garage or store. They are a genuine space win, but the corner shelf is usually rated lower than a standard shelf because the load path is longer — check the figure rather than assuming it matches the run.
- Second-hand boltless racking. We supply new only. Used boltless can be a sound buy, but only if the posts are undamaged, the beams are all from the same system, and you know the original load rating. Mixed-lot boltless with no documented rating is not worth the saving.
Boltless shelving FAQs
Does boltless shelving fall apart if knocked?
Properly seated lug and rivet joints tighten under load and are secure in normal use. What damages any shelving — boltless or bolted — is impact from handling equipment, which is why damaged components must be replaced promptly.
Can I cut boltless shelving down or mix heights?
Systems are modular rather than cuttable: choose from the range of upright heights and shelf sizes, and mix bay heights within a run where the system allows. The R3000 supports a wide variety of heights, depths and widths.
Is boltless shelving suitable for a garage?

What is the difference between boltless shelving and longspan?

How much weight can a boltless shelving unit hold?
Retail units are typically rated 150–300 kg per shelf as a uniformly distributed load, so a five-tier unit holds roughly 750–1,500 kg in total. Trade and engineered systems go considerably higher, but the figure that matters is always the per-shelf UDL of the specific system, not the headline bay number.
Do you need tools to assemble boltless shelving?
No spanners or drivers, but you want a rubber or soft-faced mallet to seat the joints fully, and a spirit level to check the first bay is square and plumb before you build the rest of the run.
