Shelving is the quickest way to turn a shed or garden building from a floor-stacked jumble into usable storage. But sheds are a harsher home for shelving than a heated garage or stores area: they're often damp, unheated, uneven underfoot and tight on space. This guide covers how to choose shelving that copes with those conditions — and why commercial steel shelving usually outlasts the flat-pack units sold for the job.
Shed shelving vs garage and warehouse shelving
There's no separate category of "shed shelving" in the industrial world — what goes into a shed well is the same hand-loaded steel shelving used in stores and workshops, chosen with three constraints in mind:
- Moisture. Most sheds are unheated and see condensation year-round. Finish matters more than any other spec.
- Floor. Timber shed floors flex and are rarely level. Bay weight needs spreading, and heavy items belong on the lowest shelves.
- Space. Narrow footprints, low eaves and inward-opening doors limit bay sizes far more than load ratings do.

Why commercial steel beats flat-pack in a shed
The plastic and light rivet units sold in DIY sheds are priced for occasional loads in dry rooms. In a shed they tend to fail in predictable ways: sagging shelves, corrosion at cut edges, and racking (side-to-side lean) on uneven floors. Commercial steel shelving — like the modular boltless-lug heavy-duty shelving systems we supply — is built for repeated loading, publishes a proper shelf UDL (uniformly distributed load) rating, and is available in galvanised finishes that shrug off damp. It costs more than a flat-pack unit; it is also normally the last shelving the building needs.
Coping with a damp, unheated building
- Choose a galvanised finish. Zinc-coated steel resists surface rust in condensation-prone buildings far better than paint alone. The SSI Schaefer heavy-duty industrial shelving we stock is available galvanised or painted — for a shed, galvanised is the default choice.
- Keep the bottom shelf off the floor. Set the lowest shelf a beam-pitch up so air circulates and any water ingress doesn't sit against stored goods.
- Use lidded totes and bins. Open cardboard wicks moisture; sealed plastic totes on steel shelves keep contents dry and make shelf loads easy to handle.
- Ventilate. Airflow around the bays does more for corrosion control than any coating.
Sizing shelving to a shed
- Depth: 300–450 mm suits most shed walls; 600 mm deep bays swallow bulky kit but eat floor space fast in a narrow building.
- Height: work to the eaves, not the ridge — and keep anything heavy below shoulder height so it can be lifted safely without steps.
- Doors and windows: check swing arcs and sight-lines before fixing bay positions.
- Starter and extension bays: modular systems let you run a starter bay plus extensions along a wall, sharing uprights — cheaper and more rigid than separate freestanding units.

How to choose: five questions
- What's the heaviest single shelf-load? Match it to the published shelf UDL with headroom to spare.
- Is the building damp? If yes, galvanised finish and lidded containers.
- What footprint can you give up? Measure wall runs, eaves height and door swings before choosing bay sizes.

Safe assembly and loading
Assemble on the flattest section of floor and pack uprights level — a leaning bay carries less than its rating and racks under load. On timber floors, place bays over joists where possible to spread point loads. Load heavy items low, keep weight within the shelf UDL, and never climb the bays.
