A garage fills up faster than any other space in a house — tyres, tools, paint tins, camping gear, the lawnmower, boxes nobody has opened since the move. The quickest way to get the floor back is to build up the walls. This guide covers how to choose garage shelving and garage racking, how to size it to a real garage, what a shelf load rating actually means, and — honestly — when commercial steel is worth paying for and when a £60 unit from a DIY shed is the right answer.
We sell industrial shelving to workshops, stores and trade units, not budget garage shelving units, so this guide is written from that side of the fence. That means it is useful on the questions the DIY listings do not answer, and blunt about the point where our own products stop being sensible for a domestic garage.
Garage shelving or garage racking — is there a difference?
The two words get used interchangeably and most garage storage systems are sold under both. There is still a useful working distinction. Shelving means closely spaced tiers carrying boxes, tins and smaller items — the everyday clutter. Racking means heavier, wider-spaced framework for bulky or awkward loads: tyres, timber, engine parts, big crates. In practice most listings sell both as garage storage racks. Most garages want a mix — a long run of garage storage shelves for the small things and one heavier bay for the difficult items.

How much weight can a garage shelf hold?
This is the most asked question on the topic and the most badly answered, because almost every listing quotes a number without saying what the number means.
Shelf ratings are quoted as a UDL — uniformly distributed load. That is the weight the shelf carries when it is spread evenly across the whole shelf. It is not the weight you can put in one place. A shelf rated 150 kg UDL will take fifteen 10 kg boxes filling the shelf; it will not necessarily take a 120 kg engine block sitting on a 300 mm square in the middle of the span. A concentrated point load bends the deck in a way a distributed load does not, and it is the single most common way a garage shelf gets quietly wrecked.
Three more things worth knowing before you trust a number on a box:
- The rating assumes the unit is built as designed. Full bracing, back panel if the design includes one, all fixings in, standing level. Half-built units and units missing their diagonal braces do not carry their rated load.
- Bay load and shelf load are different figures. Five shelves rated 150 kg each does not automatically mean a 750 kg bay. The uprights have their own limit.
- Rating is quoted for a stated shelf width. The same deck on a wider span carries less. If a supplier quotes one figure across a whole size range, treat it with suspicion.
We do not publish a single headline UDL for our own shelving, and that is deliberate rather than evasive: both the heavy-duty shelving systems we supply are configured to order, and the honest figure depends on shelf width, depth and deck type. Tell us the bay size you need and we will get the manufacturer's rating for that exact configuration rather than quote a headline number that may not apply to what you buy.
The honest bit: what our shelving costs, and when it is the wrong answer
A search for garage shelving returns Screwfix, B&Q, Wickes, Argos, Amazon and IKEA at £40 to £150 a bay. Our shelving starts around £950 to £1,800 a bay for the GPC Small Parts Shelf Units (ASU) and the SSI Schaefer R3000 is quoted per configuration with a 30–45 day lead time because it is made to order.
That is a serious gap and we are not going to pretend it away. Here is the straight version.
A budget DIY unit is the right answer if the garage stores household clutter — boxes, tins, sports kit, garden bits — the loads are tens of kilos per shelf, and the unit will not be moved or reconfigured. Buy the best of the cheap ones, build it fully, fix it to the wall, and put the money you saved into decent lidded totes.
The industrial spec earns its price in a different garage: one that is really a working workshop or a trade unit. Specifically, when any of these are true — the shelving carries stock or tools you earn a living with; loads run into the low hundreds of kilos a shelf; the layout will change as the business does; the unit must last twenty years in an unheated building; or you need the shelving to integrate with bins, dividers, drawers and doors rather than just hold boxes. The R3000's bolt-less lug system means shelves reposition without dismantling the bay, which matters enormously if the contents change and matters not at all if they never will.
There is also a middle tier worth knowing about, which we do not sell: several UK suppliers do genuine heavy duty garage shelving at £150–£350 a bay — thicker-gauge boltless steel with a real published rating, sold to trade as well as DIY. If the £60 unit is too flimsy and a made-to-order industrial system is overkill, that is the band to shop in, and we would rather point you at it than upsell.
Put plainly: if the honest description of the space is "my garage", buy the DIY unit. If it is "my garage, but I work in it", buy heavy duty garage shelving from a trade shelving supplier. If it is "my workshop", talk to us.
The garage shelving units we do supply
GPC Small Parts Shelf Units (ASU) are shelving bays supplied complete with tray sets, built for the fasteners-and-fittings end of a workshop. The trays come in nine sizes — 90 mm or 140 mm deep, 117 mm or 234 mm wide, in 300, 400 and 500 mm shelf depths — and the handle-stop lets a tray be withdrawn and hung off the shelf front, giving roughly 90% clear picking without taking the tray off the unit. Part-height and full-height bays are available, all listed models are starter bays, and extension bays, dividers and replacement trays are available on request. This is the right unit for a garage that has become a small-parts store; it is a poor use of money for storing camping gear.
SSI Schaefer R3000 is the modular system: double box-profile uprights with integrated footplates, solid steel deck shelves that install straight onto pre-punched posts without beams, and a bolt-less lug system for repositioning. Galvanised or painted steel, an accessory range covering bins, dividers, drawers, doors, solid or mesh panels, floor rails and label holders, and it scales from single bays to multi-tier installations. Made to order, 30–45 days.
Neither is a tyre rack, and we do not sell one. If storing tyres is the main job, look for a purpose-made tyre rack — and store them upright rather than stacked flat in a tall pile, which deforms the ones at the bottom.
Sizing shelving to a real garage
Measure the wall, not the floor. Note wall length and ceiling height, then mark where the obstructions are — an up-and-over door sweeps back into the room and its track eats the top of the side walls, roller-door mechanisms sit high on the opening, and consumer units, lights and the boiler flue all claim space. Garage wall shelving that has to be cut short after delivery is the most avoidable mistake on this list.
Depth is about reach, not capacity. 300–450 mm suits boxes, tins and tools and lets you see what is at the back. 600 mm bays take tyres, crates and bulky kit but you will be reaching over the front row for whatever is behind. If the garage also parks a car, measure the clear width with the car in and the doors open before you commit to deep bays — this is the number that decides whether the shelving gets used or resented.
Height: put the weight in the middle. Use the full wall, but keep the heavy items between knee and shoulder height. The bottom shelf should be a little off the floor so a wet floor does not wick into stored boxes, and the top shelf should be light, seldom-used things only. If you need to get above head height regularly, use proper steps rather than climbing the frame — garage shelving is not a ladder and the rating assumes the load is on the deck, not on the front edge with your weight behind it.
Cold, damp and condensation
Most garages are unheated, and a cold slab under a warm-ish roof produces condensation on every cold surface in the building. That is hard on bare steel and murder on cardboard.
Galvanised steel resists it far better than thin painted DIY racking, which is one of the genuine arguments for the industrial spec in an unheated building — our guide to galvanised versus powder-coated steel covers when each finish is worth specifying. Whatever the shelving, use lidded plastic totes rather than cardboard for anything you care about, keep the bottom shelf clear of the floor, and accept that chipboard-decked units belong in the drier half of the garage. The same logic applies a step further out in a shed or garden building.
Is it cheaper to build garage shelving than buy it?
Usually yes on materials, often no on everything else. A timber shelving run built from CLS and OSB can come in under a bought steel bay, and it can be made to fit an awkward wall exactly, which no bought unit does. What you give up is a stated load rating, the ability to move it, and — in a damp garage — longevity, because timber and sheet materials take up moisture and sag over time in a way steel does not.
We do not sell timber and have nothing to gain either way, so the honest steer is this: build it if the wall is genuinely awkward, you enjoy the work, and the loads are moderate. Buy it if you want a known rating, want it up this weekend, or expect the layout to change. Do not build it to save money on a run you will then load with engine parts, because the cost of getting that wrong is not measured in pounds.
Common garage shelving mistakes
- Buying on shelf count instead of shelf rating. Five shelves is not a specification. The UDL and the bay load are.
- Ignoring point loads. Heavy, concentrated items — a gearbox, a full toolbox, a stack of paving slabs — need to sit low and across the span, not in the middle of one shelf.
- Going deeper than you can reach. Deep bays hold more and hide more.
- Not fixing tall bays back to the wall. A loaded free-standing bay in a garage where a car door swings is a genuine hazard. Fix it where the wall allows.
- Loading it top-heavy. The most common cause of a bay going over.
- Forgetting the door. Up-and-over doors sweep. Measure the arc, not just the opening.
- Standing steel directly on a wet slab. Feet corrode first. Footplates and a dry floor line matter.
- Buying a system with no extension bays. Garages always need one more bay eighteen months later.
Choosing in five questions
- What is the heaviest single thing going on it? Match the UDL comfortably above it and think about whether that weight is spread or concentrated.
- How much usable wall is there? Length and height, after the door track, lights and consumer unit.
- Boxes or bulky items? Shallow shelving for the former, wider and deeper bays for the latter.
- How damp does it get? Galvanised steel and lidded totes in a cold garage.
- Will it need to grow or change? If yes, buy a system with extension bays and repositionable shelves. If no, that flexibility is money you do not need to spend.
Garage shelving FAQ
How much weight can a garage shelf hold? Light DIY units typically manage tens of kilos per shelf; commercial steel shelving carries substantially more. The figure to check is the UDL — the load spread evenly across the shelf — and the separate bay load for the whole unit. A concentrated point load is a different case entirely and needs more headroom.
What is the best shelving system for a garage? For household storage, a well-built boltless steel unit sized to your wall. For a working garage or a small workshop, a modular industrial system with repositionable shelves and extension bays, because the layout will change. There is no single best garage shelving — the honest answer depends on whether the loads are tens or hundreds of kilos.
Is metal garage shelving better than plastic or wood? For anything beyond light boxes, yes. Steel takes higher shelf loads, copes with damp far better than chipboard, and will not sag or crack the way plastic tiers do under weight. For light, occasional storage in a dry garage, plastic is perfectly adequate and easier to clean.

What should I use for tyres, timber and long items? Not standard shelving. Long items want vertical or bar racks — see the racking and shelving range — and tyres want a purpose-made tyre rack, stored upright.
How high can I stack boxes on garage shelving? Up to the point where you can no longer lift them down safely from the floor. Keep the top shelf light, and if you need steps to reach it, keep steps in the garage rather than improvising.
