Racking usually means heavier, wider-spaced framework for bulky or weighty loads: tyres, engine parts, timber, big storage crates. Most garages want a mix: a run of shelving for the small stuff and a heavier bay or two for the awkward, heavy items.

Sizing shelving to your garage
Measure the wall, not just the floor. Note the wall length, the ceiling height, and — critically — where the up-and-over or roller door tracks, lights and consumer unit sit, because they eat into usable wall. Leave room to walk past a parked car if the garage doubles as parking.
Depth. 300–450mm suits boxes, tins and tools; 600mm deep bays take tyres, big crates and bulky kit. Deeper shelves hold more but make the garage feel narrower, so mix depths to suit.
Height and top shelves. Tall bays use the full wall, but keep heavy items between knee and shoulder height and reserve the top shelf for light, seldom-used things. For anything above head height use proper steps rather than climbing the frame.
Coping with a cold, damp garage
Garages are usually unheated, and condensation is the enemy of bare steel and cardboard alike. Galvanised or well-painted steel shelving resists corrosion far better than cheap coated racks; keep the bottom shelf a little off the floor so a wet floor does not wick into stored boxes; and use lidded plastic totes rather than cardboard for anything you care about. 1. What is the heaviest thing you will store? Match the shelf load rating (quoted as a uniformly distributed load) comfortably above it. 2. How much wall have you got? Favour galvanised steel and lidded totes. 5. Will it grow? Choose a system with extension bays so you can add to the run later.
Putting it up safely
Load heavy items low to keep each bay stable, spread the weight evenly rather than stacking it all at one end, and fix tall or free-standing runs back to the wall where you can — a loaded bay that tips is dangerous. Never climb the shelving; use steps for high shelves. Follow the manufacturer's assembly and load instructions, and do not exceed the stated shelf ratings.
