Bottom-Emptying Skips

A bottom emptying skip discharges its load downwards through the base instead of tipping it forwards over the front lip. It is a narrower requirement than a general-purpose tipping skip, but where it applies, nothing else does the job as cleanly.

Why the discharge direction matters

A tipping skip throws its contents forward and outward. That is fine over an open bay, and it is the cheapest way to empty a skip. But it means the load lands in front of the skip, over an arc the driver has to allow for, and the whole body has to rotate — which needs clearance ahead of the forks and, on a full unit, produces a fast-moving load once it goes past the balance point.

Bottom emptying inverts all of that. The load leaves through the base, so it lands underneath the skip rather than in front of it. The skip body stays level and under control throughout. In practice that suits:

  • Discharge into a hopper, chute or machine feed — where the receiving opening is fixed and the load has to go straight down into it.
  • Confined bays — where there is no room in front of the forks for a body to swing forward.
  • Loads you do not want thrown — where a controlled release matters more than emptying speed.
  • Discharge over a lower container — positioning the skip above the target and releasing, rather than aiming a tipped load into it.

The unit

The GPC Bottom Emptying Skip is supplied as model SK209Z, manufactured in the UK by GPC Industries Ltd.

An honest note on specification: the published detail on this unit is limited to the model reference. If a specific capacity, footprint or discharge height is critical to your application — as it usually is with a bottom-emptying unit, because the receiving hopper sets the geometry — confirm those figures at quotation rather than assuming them. Ask before you order; we would rather answer the question than have the wrong unit arrive on a pallet.

Deciding between discharge types

Work backwards from the receiving point, not from the skip:

  • Open bay, plenty of room in front, operator has clear sight — a standard tilting skip is the cheapest correct answer.
  • Repeated discharge, or discharge the driver cannot see — a self-closing skip, which drops its base and re-seals from a chain pulled inside the cab.
  • Fixed receiving opening directly below — bottom emptying.
  • Waste collected at the machine and moved by handmobile swarf skips or mini skips.

Handling and safe use

Like the rest of the forklift-handled skip range, this is equipment lifted by a truck and discharged at height. Two things follow from that. First, rate the job on the loaded weight at the truck's stated load centre — waste that fills a skip by volume and waste that fills it by weight are rarely the same material, and our load ratings guide explains why the headline capacity is not the figure that governs. Second, keep people clear of the area beneath and around the skip during discharge — with a bottom-emptying unit that exclusion zone is directly underneath, which is not where operators instinctively expect it to be.
