Racking vs shelving: the dividing line
The practical rule: shelving is loaded by hand; racking is loaded by machine or carries loads too heavy or long for hand-loading. If your stock arrives palletised, or single items run into hundreds of kilos or several metres long, you're specifying racking. 1. Pallet racking
The default for palletised stock: upright frames and horizontal beams forming bays that forklifts load directly. Adjustable beam pitches, starter-and-extension bay construction, and a wide accessory range (timber decks, mesh decks, barriers) make it the most flexible system in the building. 2. Cantilever racking
Arms projecting from vertical columns, with no front uprights — so loads of any length can be placed along the arms. It's the system for timber, pipe, extrusions, sheet bundles and anything else that won't fit in a bay. Best for: long, awkward loads — timber, pipe, profiles, sheet material in bundles.
3. Longspan shelving (the racking/shelving hybrid)

4. Sheet and vertical racking

5. Mezzanine platforms
Not racking in the strict sense, but the next step when floor space runs out: a steel platform that adds a second storage level above existing operations. - How does stock arrive and leave? Palletised in/out points to pallet racking; hand-picked points to longspan or shelving.
- What's the longest item? Anything over bay width belongs on cantilever or vertical racking.
- What does a loaded position weigh? Match beam and arm ratings with headroom, and treat all published figures as UDL.

Safety, inspection and the rules
Racking in a workplace falls under PUWER — it must be suitable, installed correctly and maintained. SEMA guidance and HSE HSG76 set the inspection regime: trained-staff visual checks plus an annual expert inspection, with damage classified red/amber/green.
